Readers Letter

I think it's about time that those opposing the Tesco in Sheringham admit that it has nothing to do with a Supermarket shutting local businesses down and that it is because it is Tesco.  Typically, many of the opponents say that if it were Asda, Sainsbury or   Waitrose they would be more than happy for them to come as they are not 'bully boys'.  Talk about eyes wide shut!  All large supermarket chains are the same, they offer goods at more affordable prices and if one will put the locals out of business, so will the others.  I personally think that Tesco coming would help local businesses - and I am entitled to my opinion.

Many of these self same people are now supporting the 'eco friendly' store plans, despite the fact that it will be expensive, import goods that are not available locally or are out of season,  is too far for those in town without transport and more importantly, too far away from the existing shops, so people would be less likely to do any shopping in the Town Centre.  Add to this that it is HUGE, much bigger than the Tesco plan which was turned down.  One of the reasons for those plans being turned down was that it was too big for the needs of Sheringham, an argument used by the Anti-Tesco people, who are now apparently excited about the Eco Store.

There are many that say they are against Tesco because of the volume of  traffic it will cause, but have said they support the Eco Store.  Do they believe that shoppers at the Eco Store are going to teleport themselves like something out of Star Trek?  To get into Sheringham from the main road, there are only two options - Lodge Hill which comes out at the Police Station, having passed Sheringham High School and the Holway Road, where they would reach the same roundabout that cannot take the Tesco traffic.  Those from the Cromer end would drive exactly the same route as for the proposed Tesco store, with one subtle difference, they would have to go further along the road, making exiting Sheringham over the railway bridge even more hazardous than it is now.  The only direction that would have less impact is  Weybourne, from where it is likely the least number of shoppers would come.

So, are you against a supermarket coming to Sheringham, or is it Tesco?  M Clarke
