Active Norfolk Youth Games 2009

A date for your diary!

This year's Active Norfolk Youth Games will take place on Thursday 18th June at the UEA Sportspark, with the swimming gala taking place the following Friday 26th June

This popular annual event is open to all of Norfolk's Special Schools and some neighbouring schools in Lowestoft as well as young people with a disability in mainstream high schools. The games are also open to any young people who attend any of Norfolk's multi-sport clubs.  A range of sports and activities will be on offer this year including old favourites like Zone Hockey, Tennis, Badminton and Athletics together with new events for this year such as Curling, Boccia and Capoeira.  The event is all about participation with everyone encouraged to come along and have a go. This year will see bigger opening and closing ceremonies and stalls with information points for parents.   Martin Symons has a rare condition called Klippel-Feil Syndrome which is a musculo-skeletal deformity and associated conditions. In the 90's he undertook a number of challenges including climbing Snowdon, Ben Nevis and visiting Nepal. Martin has always been a very active person until in 2001 when he suffered respiratory failure.  In the last week of June 2009 he will undertake his first challenge since 2001 and will cross England on the Hadrian's Wall Cycle route. It runs from Bowness-on-Solway in the west to Tynemouth in the east, a journey of 100 miles coast to coast. Martin will spend 3-4 hours in the 'saddle' each day covering between 15 and 20 miles. The journey will take 7 days. To complete the challenge, Martin will require a full 8 hours on his respirator each night to recover enough strength for the following days adventure!  For more information or for details on the charity he is fundraising for and how to sponsor Martin please visit www.martinsymons.com
