GARDENING
Lilac
Lilacs that have become too big can be cut down to approximately 50 cm above the ground
immediately after flowering. They will soon develop new branches.
Rose suckers
Although June is not the usual time to prune roses, it is the perfect moment to tackle
suckers. These should be pulled out completely rather than cut off, as cut suckers are
likely to reappear. These suckers can be recognized by their slightly lighter colour and
differently shaped leaves.
Pruning border geraniums
If you prune your border geraniums now, they will flower for a second time this summer.
Pruning clematis
Prune early flowering clematis varieties, a simple pruning consists of cutting away
thin branches and dead wood. If the plant has an untidy tangle of branches, or if it has
become too heavy, wide or tall, more drastic pruning is required. Cut off some of the
runners that have flowered, cutting back hard to just above a shoot. This controls growth,
and the plant will soon develop beautiful new flowering branches.
Lawns
Do not mow the lawn in sunny weather as the grass may burn.
Watering
Water in the morning. Watering in the evening can encourage the development of mould. |
