NEARING THE HALFWAY MARK, BUT £85,000 STILL NEEDED FOR SHERINGHAM LEVEL CROSSING

The North Norfolk Railway's appeal for funds to reinstate an "occasional use" level crossing connecting the Poppy and Bittern Lines at Sheringham has now reached £55,000 donated or pledged.

Project director Steven Ashling, chairman designate of the railway, says: "We hope that a summer push for funds will raise the £85,000 still needed to ensure we can start preliminary work in the autumn and install the crossing next January."

The appeal organisers are looking to businesses in the town to contribute. "We plan to bring in steam charter trains at weekends outside the main holiday season - each with some 300 new visitors creating extra trade for the town," says Mr Ashling.

Businesses are being asked to sponsor a piece of the crossing - from a yard of rail at just £150 to a crossing gate at £2,500. All sponsors and donors will be recorded in a Crossing Honours book which will be on public display at Sheringham station.

A special appeal leaflet gives all the details, and is available at the station; or you can visit www.nnrailway.co.uk/crossing for information.
