NORFOLK BRASS COMES TO CROMER

The second of the two summer charity concerts organised by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club will be performed by the award-winning and hugely popular Norfolk Brass Band. The event will take place in Cromer Parish Church on Friday, September 11 at 7.30 pm. The proceeds will go to Diabetes UK.

This year, after a period of rebuilding and rejuvenation, Norfolk Brass have swept back into prominence. In March, under the experienced direction of David Stowell, the band won the London and Southern Counties Regional Championship. This not only gained them promotion to what is called the 'Championship Section', but also automatic qualification to the final of the Great Britain Brass Band Championships in September. No other band in Norfolk and Suffolk has 'Championship' status and the win makes Norfolk Brass on the leading bands in the country.

The judges in March described the performance as 'head and shoulders above the rest... a band refreshed and rejuvenated with not a turkey in sight' and '... a handful of bands battle to take the second qualification spot but as far as the winner though, there was absolutely no doubt'.

"With a band of around 32 musicians, it should be a rousing and stirring evening" said Jill Boocock of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club. Tickets ( £7 ) are available as usual from Randalls Electrical in Cromer, Bertram Watts in Sheringham or on the night at the door. A full house is expected.

U3A (University of the Third Age)

The next meeting of U3A (University of the Third Age) North Walsham will be held on Friday September 4th 2009 at 2.30pm at the Roman Catholic Church Hall on King’s Arms Street North Walsham. The guest speaker will be Norman Barnes who will talk about ‘Genealogy’.

The North Walsham University of the Third Age (U3A) meets on the 1st Friday of every month starting at 2.30pm. Entrance is free for members of U3A & £2 for non-members, who will be made most welcome. Those unable to attend can get details of U3A from Membership Secretary Janet Chamberlain on 01692 406069. See also the U3A website at www.u3a.org.uk

VERA WOODCOCK RECEIVES TOP ROTARY AWARD

One of Cromer's best-known personalities has been awarded a prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club. The award - given for her outstanding services to the community over many years - was presented to Vera Woodcock at last week's Club meeting by President Donald Mayes. She is only the fourth woman to receive the award in the last ten years.

Later, as a schools' careers officer she helped many young people find jobs and, for these efforts, was awarded the MBE. She has been a Cromer Town Councillor for mant years and also served on the North Norfolk District Council becoming Chairman of that body.
