HELP US MAKE A DIFFERENCE .. BECOME A VOLUNTEER!

The Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them.

Here at the North Norfolk Branch we provide support and services to over 200 local people with dementia, and their carers. Helping us to provide this varied, high quality support and care is a band of dedicated volunteers. Quite simply we would not be able to deliver many of our services without the commitment and skills volunteer's offer. Our volunteers help us with everything, from supporting individual people with dementia and their carers, in their own homes, to assisting us at support groups, to fundraising and campaigning! The list of opportunities is endless!

In fact we have just been given a grant to carry out a Life Story Book project across North Norfolk - and are currently desperate for volunteers to help run the project!

In return we offer training, ongoing support, payment of out-of-pocket expenses, and we are flexible in relation to personal circumstances. We strive to make volunteers feel valued and respected in all they do.

If you feel you are able to offer some time to the North Norfolk Branch, we would love to hear from you. Or if you would like to find out more then please call the office and speak to me, Laura Meadowcroft, Branch Manager.

Eat an iron rich diet and give a pint of ‘the red stuff’ this summer

People across East Anglia, Essex and East London are being asked to help save lives throughout the summer months as the National Blood Service (NBS) launches its ‘Big Summer BBQ’ appeal.  With the holiday season fast approaching and thoughts turning to holidays, al fresco dining and barbeques, Franck Pontais, Ready Steady Cook celebrity chef, and the National Blood Service are highlighting the importance of giving blood this summer and eating an iron rich diet to help maintain healthy blood.

Each year the NBS requires a staggering 244,000 blood donations across the Anglia region, but last year, one in 20 people* who visited a donor centre to give blood, was unable to do so, because the haemoglobin in their blood was too low. Iron is important to keep your levels of haemoglobin up, which is why it is so important to eat foods containing it.

Blood is needed for treating a variety of illnesses and conditions - not just for accidents and emergencies. Even for some whose illness has no cure, a blood transfusion can help to improve the quality of their life. The NBS needs to collect up to 7,000 units every day to make sure that patients in hospitals across England and north Wales are able to receive the life saving treatments they require. This means a total of almost two million donations each year are required to meet the ongoing demand for blood.
Franck Pontais said: “The need for donors across Anglia is constant and yet still only four per cent of the eligible population gives blood and donor numbers are falling. The NBS needs new donors to come forward, and existing donors to give blood this summer. My family and I are strong supporters of blood donation and give regularly.  “If you’re rustling up a barbeque, remember to pick foods which are iron rich in order to keep your blood healthy. Fish, beef and chicken are great for the barbeque and contain lots of iron. Choose wholemeal bread for your burger buns too. Eggs, green vegetables and tofu are also iron rich as an option for those who don’t eat meat.”

Regular donors and non-donors alike are being encouraged to think about giving blood over the summer to ensure that blood levels are not dramatically affected by the decrease in new donors coming forward.  Donors can ring the National Donor Helpline on 0845 7 711711 (open 24hrs) or visit www.blood.co.uk to register details, find the venues and times for your nearest blood donation session and book an appointment.
