Cats Protection

We have had several litters of kittens recently that have either been born in care or have joined us at less than six weeks of age. These kittens are very fortunate as they have had contact with several people during the important early weeks and are used to being handled. Kittens like Starsky and Hutch, who came from stables at about 6 weeks old, took a few days to adapt to contact with us but soon learnt to trust their carers and are now happily settled in a new home. We have over the last two months also had several kittens aged from seven to about twelve weeks who have come in from "outside" situations. These kittens are always more of a challenge for our fosterers and take a little longer to learn to trust people and do need extra time to adapt to their new homes. Most of these are now ready to be re-homed (although Pauline still has one that is proving a challenge) and are looking for caring new homes, with no young children. These young cats are usually happy to live with other cats, and once they are settled, are usually very loving and loyal companions. If you feel you could give a home to Dandy. Angie, Puss or Dennis (or would enjoy the challenge of socializing Finn), please give Stephanie a call.

Cars Protection

Three new cats, Mindy, Amy and Tigy (all about 8 years old) have joined us because their owner, a lady who has done a lot of work for cats, is no longer able to look after them. Let down by another charity who had promised to take them if she had them vaccinated we were only too happy to help once a pen became available. I don't expect these lovely cats will be with us for long.

We sometimes have older cats that have been in care for some time. At present we only have one, Mabel a sweet black and white girl, who is 13 years old and has some health problems (which we would continue to cover should she find a new home). If you would like to offer her a home please contact Stephanie.

Norfolk Pie Challenge Saturday 10th October

Two Norfolk chefs will be competing this month to see who the public think can make the tastiest pies. Free samples will be given to the public who will be asked to vote for their favourite pie maker.  Kelling chef Paul Strety’s love of baking came from spending many happy hours cooking with Mrs Gladys Bunn from the village who sadly died this year.  “She passed on much of her traditional cooking skills to me” says Paul “and that’s what good pies are all about- good wholesome local food cooked in the traditional way.”  For the competition Paul is producing his new season game pie which will have pheasant, pigeon, rabbit or hare, in a rich red wine gravy with a secret blend of spices and herbs.  “I’ll also be doing my venison pie, because its just very popular with my customers who often come and buy in bulk to freeze them”.  Competing against Paul is chef James Nicholls from Swafield who has developed new pork sausage turnovers with caramelized onions, ketchup and mustard. Plus famous pork pies with the addition of chilli jam, or pickle or just plain.
James is the cook at home for his family and loves inventing new dishes, “My favourite odd dish is squirrel pie, but I think that might be a bit too adventurous for the competition on Saturday says Paul.  The Norfolk pie challenge is a free event and takes place on Saturday 10th October 10- 1 pm at the Produced in Norfolk farmers market at Wroxham Barns Hoveton
