Norfolk Community Foundation

Norfolk Community Foundation has thousands of pounds to distribute in January 2010 to community and voluntary groups based in North Norfolk. The funding comes from the North Norfolk Community Partnership and is available to groups that:

Are largely volunteer led
Have a constitution
Have a management committee of at least three people
Have a bank account with two signatories
Are working to improve their community

Funding of up to £5,000 can be used for a variety of costs including running costs, special projects and equipment. Projects supported when the fund last made grants in July 2009 included:

North Walsham Scout group for a range of improvements to its scout hut
Stibbard Parish Council to improve play equipment in the village
The Playvan project which provides play opportunities in isolated communities in North Norfolk
The Alzheimer's Society for work with older people living with dementia in North Norfolk

Grant Applications from Cromer and Fakenham are particularly sought as few grants have been made in these areas, but applications are welcomed from across the North Norfolk District.

For more information or to access an application pack, visit the Foundation's website at www.norfolkfoundation.com or call 01603 623958 and speak to the Grants Team.

Green councillor welcomes end of National Express Anglia franchise; calls for return to public ownership

In reaction to the end of National Express’ Anglia franchise,
Councillor Rupert Read, Green Party Transport Spokesperson, said: "This is good news. National Express elsewhere in the country has gone bankrupt - it would be ludicrous for it to be allowed to limp on, here in East Anglia.

“However, Lord Adonis should have been much bolder: he has wimped out of taking the franchise back into public hands NOW, which is what really should have happened.

"As everybody knows, a key block to the railways becoming the true 21st century alternative to mass motoring is: the balkanized,
privatised railway system.

“Until that system is joined up into one again, and placed under
public control, public investment in the railways will always be
creamed off by the fat cat profiteers running the train-operating and rolling-stock-owning companies at present.

“In other words: the taking of ALL the National Express franchises
back into public hands ought to be just the first stage of what the
Green Party are calling for: the renationalisation of the railways.

“If the railways are to play their full part in preventing climate
meltdown, they need to be under public control – not run for profit
with ever-growing and increasingly unaffordable ticket prices."
