POPPY LINE A DOUBLE WINNER
IN NATIONAL RAILWAY HERITAGE AWARDS

The presentation of the 2009 National Railway Heritage Awards took place in the City of London's historic Merchant Taylors Hall on December 2nd. And two of the prestige Awards went to the North Norfolk's Poppy Line for the volunteer-led Holt signalling project, completed and commissioned earlier in the year.

Nerve centre of the project is an ex-Midland Railway signal box re-erected in the Station Yard at Holt Station, the southern terminus of the line. The NRHA Signalling Award was made for the project as a whole, and the Volunteers Award recognised the work of the dedicated band of enthusiasts who over the past five years have brought a very complex project to life.

Volunteer leader Roger Bell and North Norfolk Railway Managing Director Hugh Harkett were at Merchant Taylors Hall to receive the Awards. Mr Harkett said: "To win two awards for this project is a tremendous tribute to Roger and his team, who have worked so hard to bring it to fruition. It has made a huge difference to our operation, and enabled us to run very intensive steam services at all our major events. It has, quite genuinely, transformed the Railway, as our visitors this year have seen."

This is the second time that developments at Holt Station have been recognised in the National Railway Heritage Awards. The station building, originally the M&GN's Stalham Station, won second place in the Volunteers Award in 2005.

Mr Harkett added: "The scale of what of our volunteers and staff have done to turn Holt from a single platform into a major feature of the Railway and a destination in its own right is awesome. But we've not finished yet - we're planning even more developments over the next few years."

Holt is now obviously the heritage railway space to watch - at least until the level crossing at Sheringham opens next March!
