Local businesses find safer workplaces make for better work

Over 50 businesses from across Norfolk joined the inaugural Safer Workplace, Better Business scheme, designed to make health and safety management easy for small businesses.
The district and borough councils in North Norfolk, Great Yarmouth, Breckland and King’s Lynn joined forces to run Safer Workplace, Better Business, offering businesses with between five and 15 employees free training and one-to-one coaching. The scheme will be rolled out to more Norfolk businesses next year.

During European Health and Safety Week in October, Councillor Virginia Gay, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, presented certificates to the North Norfolk businesses that have so far implemented a safety management system. They are:
Janith Homes Ltd, Cypress Lodge, Station Road, Potter Heigham
Scarborough House Residential Home, Clubbs Lane, Wells-Next-The-Sea
Janith Homes Ltd, The Rookery, Walcott, Norfolk
Clover Childcare Services Ltd, Clover Lodge, The Common, Happisburgh
Councillor Gay said:
“These businesses say the project really helped their staff and their business. They found it much easier to implement safety management systems as a result.”

Participants in the Safer Workplace, Better Business scheme get a halfday seminar, a three-hour coaching visit and a pack to help them implement a safety management system.   Under current UK legislation, businesses employing five or more people need to document any significant risks and have a health and safety policy. N&P (Norwich and Peterborough Building Society) is holding a Christmas colouring competition, for children aged 10 years or younger, and each branch has a cuddly teddy to give away to the winner!

Christmas is coming and the countdown has started. To give youngsters a break from writing their Christmas lists and letters to Santa, each of N&P’s branches is holding a colouring competition.

A luxury white Christmas teddy ‘Harry Bear’, is up for grabs at each branch.

The competition is already underway and children can pick up their colouring poster from their local branch, or by printing one at home, from www.nandp.co.uk/harrybear.

There are three designs to choose from, a Christmas tree, snowman or a Christmas stocking.

All entries should be sent to the nearest N&P branch by Friday 18th December, and the winner will be chosen by the branch manager on Monday 21st December, so that ‘Harry Bear’ has a happy home in time for Christmas! The winning entries will be posted on the N&P website after 11th January too, so keep an eye out for them.

Jeremy Burton, retails sales and service manager, said: “It’s really great to have this competition for children to take part in. They’ll all be getting excited about Christmas, and will no doubt be full of ideas for their wish list. I know that staff in the branches are looking forward to having the entries coming in, and we are all hoping that the children will have fun doing them. ‘Harry Bear’ will be on display in the branches, so don’t forget to go
