Gardening Column, @ Sheringham PaperGARDENING

Brighten up your borders with some bulbs, and tackle those garden pests before they get out of control.

Bulbs starting to sprout, but if you've missed some areas there are plenty of flowering bulbs that can be bought at this time of the year in garden centres and nurseries.

Many choices from hyacinths to crocus, miniature narcissus, early tulips, doubles and dwarf varieties. You also can add violas, winter flowering pansies, primula and primroses.

With all the snow and ice, tidy up the edges of your lawns, never use a spade to cut the edge, use a half moon tool. A well edged and cared for lawn will set off the whole garden.

Keep the weeds at bay in your borders with a regular hoe.

Many pests over winter as eggs and stick on the stems of plants, prune now and remove them.
