GARDENING
Garden Flowers.
Seed sowing can begin if the weather is friendly: a general fertilizer, 2oz to the
sq.yd should be worked into the bed for annuals and half-hardies. Gardeners in the south,
who have hardened off their sweet pea seedlings, can now plant them out during a mild
spell. Those in the north must be more patient. The drills should be watered the day
previously and the roots carefully disentangled before planting. Care should be taken that
the brown mark or collar above the seed stem is left visible and not buried. Finally, a
few bushy twigs should be placed around each plant. Sweet pea seed can now be sown
1-1/2ins deep outdoors. Beware of mice. Many herbaceous plants should be restricted at an
early stage to 6-8 shoots a plant.
When should roses be pruned? This is the most controversial subject among rosarians,
but the majority agree that mid-February in the south to mid- April in the north is the
best time- when the sap begins to rise. But there are many that prune in December or
January and are confident that leads to earlier and larger blooms. Much will depend on
climate and weather.
TOWN COUNCIL ELECTIONS - MAY 2007
The 4 yearly Town Council Elections will take place on Thursday 3rd May 2007 - together
with elections to the District Council. For local electoral purposes, Sheringham is
divided into two wards (North and South) each returning 2 district and 8 Local
Councillors. Electors offering to serve on the Town Council have to obtain a
proposer and seconder from the ward they wish to represent (they may represent either
ward). It is anticipated that the minimum age for election will be reduced to 18, before
this coming May.
The Town Council, which meets on the first Tuesday of each month, with additional
meetings on the third Tuesday when necessary; is responsible for the provision of a range
of Local Government services including allotments, street furnishing, the management of
Commons and certain public facilities. (It has recently purchased Sheringham Wood). It is
also the Local Burial Authority. It has a statutory right to be consulted on all Planning
applications and is regularly consulted by Police Authority, County and District Councils
on services for which they are responsible.
In order to establish itself as a Quality Council (which attracts some Government
Funds) at least 14 members must be nominated to serve. (There were only 10 in 2003).
Nomination forms need to be submitted as soon as possible. For more information please
contact the Town Council on 01263 822213, between 9.30 and 12.30, Monday, Wednesday,
Friday. |
'It's fun; I wouldn't keep doing it if it wasn't
fun! We go out and we laugh.'
BeFriends is a local project which enables adults with a learning difficulty to enjoy
social activities in the community with the support of a volunteer. It is a project of
BUILD, a registered charity established in 1967 and an independent voluntary organisation
whose services are aimed at building equality, confidence and opportunity for people with
learning difficulties.

BeFriends members and volunteers are matched in a one-to-one partnership
according to their interests, hobbies and personalities and it is very important that they
have fun together! Activities could include going to the pub, bowling, cinema, fishing,
chatting over a coffee, going shopping or whatever the partners agree. AND we pay
volunteer's expenses! Befriends also hold group activities and social gatherings such as
the BUILD annual party and Summer BBQ.
We are currently looking for volunteers within the North Norfolk area, which covers
Sheringham, Cromer, Walcott, inland to North Walsham and the villages in between.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or finding out more about BeFriends then
