READERS LETTER

I am writing to you with regards to people's attitude towards sales assistants.

I have worked in a local shop for 3 and a half years now and am amazed by the growing number of people who do not say "hello", "Goodbye", "please" or "thank you". It's pure ignorance.

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone who works in a shop is there because they are under achievers. I have 11 GCSEs at higher grade passes and chose not to waste 2 years at college and 3 years at university because it is seen as the right thing to do. But opted to work in retail, as that's what appealed to me.

No matter how I am feeling I am ALWAYS polite to customers and yet around half of these people do not even say please or thank you. Some customers come in on mobiles whilst I serve them and then leave without ever acknowledging me. I wonder if these people would be so rude to a doctor or a lawyer?

It seems that endless people moan about Sales Assistants being rude or grumpy. But is it any wonder when they spend 40+ hours a week being treated as if they're thick or like their sole purpose in life is to 'serve' these ignorant people (whom, I hate to say are actually adults and not young teenagers as most people would like to think).

May I remind people that these Sales Assistants provide a service and without them nobody would be able to do their weekly shop or buy any other goods! Good manners cost nothing!  Name and Address held at office.

I have seen for myself how some people treat the assistants serving them, as I always say, treat other people the way you would like to be treated yourself.

A smile is like a virus - it spreads.

Sheringham Lifeboat 'Manchester Unity of Oddfellows'Service Launch - Saturday 17th February 2007

The Sheringham Lifeboat was launched at 14.10 hrs at the request of Yarmouth Coastguard to locate and rescue a person seen to be swimming from the beach towards the horizon. The Lifeboat intercepted the swimmer, who was suffering from severe hypothermia, approximately 500 metres from the shore and took the casualty back to the Lifeboat station from where he was eventually taken by ambulance to hospital.
