Volunteers Needed to Help Save Lives in Sheringham Area

The East of England Ambulance Service is calling for volunteers to help staff a Community First Response Group for Sheringham and the surrounding villages.

If you are a fit car driver, living or working in the area and aged between 18 and 70 years you would be trained by the Ambulance Service in Basic Life Support. This would include the administration of oxygen and the use of a portable heart defibrillator to provide first aid to a casualty in the critical time between the 999 call and the arrival of the ambulance.

The Group already has a core of volunteers and is looking for more urgently, in advance of their next training session.  “Volunteers are summoned using a pager and mobile phone by Ambulance Control to attend life-threatening emergencies such as heart attacks, chest pain, fits and breathing problems” said Scheme Co-ordinator Andrew Barlow, “We recognise that sudden cardiac arrest claims around 150,000 lives each year in the UK, with survival rates being around 5% outside of a hospital setting. The first 3-4 minutes are the most vital for the casualty and if first aid and a defibrillator are on hand the chance of survival will increase considerably.”

If you are interested in learning more or would like to receive a joining pack, contact the Community Responder Team, East of England NHS Trust, Hospital Lane, Hellesdon, Norwich NR6 5NA or call them on 01603 481220.

The continued success of the Group also relies on charitable contributions to provide life-saving equipment and supplies. If you would like to make a donation (Registered Charity No. 1047987) please make cheques payable to ‘East of England Ambulance Services (Sheringham)’ and send them to Mr D Ward at the above address.

ALICE IN SHERINGLAND

Saturday 24th March
Matinee 2.30pm
Evening 7.30pm

The Smugglers' Children's Theatre Group in a performance of "Alice in Sheringland" at the Little Theatre. Yes! "Sheringland" not "Wonderland". Alice falls in with the Wicked Red Queen, who is planning to remove Beeston Bump. Why? In order to build a croquet lawn for herself. But she doesn't reckon with The Duchess, The Cheshire Cat, The Mad Hatter, The March Hare and the Dormouse. They all team up with the rabbits on Beeston Bump to defeat the greedy Queen.

Come and see it with all the family. We hope you remember the original tale of Alice in Wonderland - you will see them all in the flesh .... even the lazy caterpillar.

THIS IS YOUR TOWN TOO

Over the past few months there has been a rise in vandalism in the town. Many businesses have suffered from broken windows amongst other things and we thought that we would try to bring to your attention the fact that you can help to stamp this out. The odd broken window may not seem to be a major problem when you compare it to the gun crime and other violent crime that is happening with sickening regularity in other parts of the Country, but it is the thin end of the wedge. When you begin to accept, and even at times ignore the smaller issues, they have a tendency to grow.  A broken window in a shop impacts on us all, the business person has to replace it either at cost to them or via their insurance company. If they claim through their insurance then their premiums go up. To recoup their costs they have to put their prices up, which in turn means that we end up paying out of our pockets. I have no doubt that the more insurance claims put in for any area also impacts upon our own house insurance, so we lose again. There were some complaints when the Robin Hood chose to board up their windows when they went away, but can you blame them?

Broken windows, damaged frontage, litter, rudeness in the street, all in themselves quite small issues, but when you add them together it doesn't paint a pretty picture and is certainly not the sort of town many of us wish to live in.  What we need is for all of us to be more aware of what is happening around us. If you see someone committing an act of vandalism or any other type of crime, stand up and be counted, please report it. Don't turn the other cheek, as we have seen in the big cities, it doesn't work.
