Kip In A Ship - HMS BelfastOn Sunday 11th February, 20 assorted Cubs & Scouts from Sheringham and Beeston Regis Sea Scout Group, accompanied by 6 parent helpers and Section Leaders, set off in high spirits, heading for the Big Smoke. All aboard - the fun starts here: we're bound for Tower Bridge and a rather impressive ship that's moored nearby. And not just visiting, but bunking down on board!! After a reasonably stress free journey, we walked from Liverpool St Station down and across London Bridge to where our magnificent quarters awaited. But before bedtime we had an evening of sightseeing to fulfil, taking in the wonders of the nearest supermarket to fill a few empty tums. We re-crossed London Bridge and passed The Monument to the Great Fire of London; saw Tower Bridge and The Tower of London all floodlit, and behind our ship, the offices of the Mayor of London. Optimistically believing our charges must be tiring we headed back to the ship and watched Ice Age 2. Our comfy bunks were calling, but like every scout camp gone before, true to form, not many eyes closed until the early hours. Bleary eyed at 6.45, we staggered to a fine breakfast in the diner before gathering up our belongings and making everything ship-shape (you just knew this pun would be in here somewhere!!). The morning took in an extensive guided tour of the ship, which was wonderfully informative but still managed to generate a multitude of questions. In addition, we had time to wander around the ship at leisure. We left the ship and made our way across Tower Bridge to go by underground to South Kensington and Baden Powell House where a three course lunch had been booked for us. Our next port of call was the Science Museum, just opposite, where we had a few hours to cram in as much as we could, but with 5 floors we were never going to do it all. Then once more into battle with the Underground, encumbered by rucksacks, as we made our way across London in rush hour to catch the homeward train. Some of the cubs have been learning about the Romans at school - this proved very useful: we formed a classic 'tortoise' to defend ourselves as we battled onwards! We sank wearily into our seats but there was no time for a brief shut-eye as we had our packed teas to consume. We reached homeground around 10.15pm, even more thankful to reach our pillows - but it had all been worth it for such a marvellous adventure.
