@ Sheringham Community Paper - Issue 73 - 13 April 2007

Readers Letter

Do we love Sheringham? Do we love living here? Of course we do. So as people that live here, what are we doing to promote it? As individuals we should chat to day-trippers and tourists wherever we meet them. The best places being while waiting for buses or trains, in pubs, shops, restaurants, the Little Theatre and the sea front. Many people that my wife and I have met in this way have welcomed the approach and are now on our Christmas card list.

I have lived and travelled in much of the UK and met many people with connections to my past. So come on you Sheringham residents, be proud of your town and help sell it by making visitors feel welcome.

We need to show what makes us happy living here to help our indigenous businesses grow as well as our facilities. So don't be complacent, sell Sheringham. This message is aimed at all residents both young and old. Richard Sacre Dupont

DORIS BUTLIN

would like to thank the two kind young ladies who helped her when she fell and hurt her nose on the kerb near the Railway Station on February 12, and also the gentleman at the Jolly Tar. She is also very grateful to the paramedic they called. Because of their care she hardly has a scar from the accident.

Excel 2000 can trace its origin to China!  Penny Bevan-Jones saw older people shadow-dancing and realised this was how they kept their health. This gave her the idea for an organisation that would promote health and emotional well being through movement and music.  Excel 2000 is now an NVQ Assessment Centre and an Investors in people organisation. A Lloyds TSB Foundations grant is set to quadruple the number of people benefiting in Norfolk over the next two years. Excel 2000 is looking for Key Personnel to train as course directors. In order to keep up with the work involved more Volunteer staff are needed for the office.

Excel 2000 also run half and full day workshops for various organisations like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and also training courses to train instructors and work in partnership with
various agencies.

Examples of current courses are our Fit is Fun series:
  • A programme of uplifting, carefully structured
recreational movement to music for those who need a gentle form of exercise.
  • An exercise programme designed to uplift and create a feeling of health and vitality, sequence to improve circulation, respiration, posture, poise, strength and stamina.
  • Managing Stress. Exploring techniques of transforming feelings of Stress, Anxiety, Fear and Tension to Tranquillity.

Excel 2000 are also developing its work with children with learning difficulties and special needs together with their
parents and carers.

CDs, DVDs and Videos are available.

Sheringham Evening WI

Sheringham in Bloom is likely to be even more blooming this summer if our members follow the advice of Paddy Corden, this month's speaker, on how to prepare and care for hanging baskets. Paddy, who is Secretary of the Sheringham Horticultural Society, gave us an absorbing talk, with lots of tips, making it look so easy, that many of us will be encouraged to have a go.

We welcomed three new members and we are looking forward to an outing to the Magical Dickens Collectors World in april. All our working groups are meeting regularly for craft, scrabble, line dancing and walking, and a guided walk in Norwich is planned for next month. Entries are coming in for the Scarecrow Competition, which will be judged at 2pm on 1st April on the 'One' station.
