Readers Letter
A photograph featured in a recent edition of your magazine has been sent
to me. It is of the land next to Hilbre School at the top of Holway Road. This land was
purchased by my late father who was Mr BS Cowell, Corn Merchant of Station Road. He bought
the land from Brig. Cubitt-Smith in the early 1950s and used it as a smallholding. My
parent subsequently had a bungalow built there and lived there for several years. The
nissen huts and sheds were used to house farm animals and chickens etc. but I cannot say
what they were originally used for.
I would add that when my father died in 1994 he left the land to my sons, but the North
Norfolk District Council in their wisdom (?) refused any kind of planning permission and
after invasion by gypsies for two years in succession it was eventually sold to a builder.
It now remains derelict and an eyesore at the entrance to Sheringham. Yours sincerely, Mrs
AC Boast nee Cowell

BREAK Charity awarded IT Equipment
BREAK Charity has received an e-ffective Connection Award through BT Community
Connections a nationwide award scheme that connects community and voluntary groups
to the internet. The IT equipment award means that more funds go towards providing
holidays for people with a range of disabilities, giving their families and carers a
break. The e-ffective Connection Award recognises groups who can demonstrate how
additional IT equipment can enhance their work and ultimately benefit the wider local
community. Five packages of a mixture of computer/IT equipment worth up to £600 each was
available for applicants to choose from. BREAK has been awarded a PC package including a
colour printer. BREAK Charity was one of hundreds of applicants that entered the award
scheme and impressed judges with its ideas on how it will continue to benefit the local
community using the additional equipment offered through the e-ffective Connection Award
package.

The £600 saved from being granted free equipment will instead go towards a supported
holiday for a child or adult with disabilities at BREAKs Rainbow Holiday Centre in
Sheringham. BREAK provides a range of specialist services for children, adults and
families with special care needs. This help includes holidays, short breaks and respite
care for people with a range of disabilities. While guests enjoy a seaside holiday with
outings and attractions, parents and carers can take a break from full time caring.
Alan Leedham, Fundraising Manager for BREAK said "We would like to say a big thank
you to BT. We chose to receive a PC package which includes a colour printer to replace my
old and outdated machine! This has meant BREAK has saved £600! BREAK spends just 6% on
administration, meaning 94p in every £1 goes to provide vital services for those who need
it, benefiting many families. A donation like this enables us to save money on costs which
can be redirected into what is important to BREAK, helping families." Beth Courtier,
head of BT's charity programme said Research showed us that although an internet
ready PC was a huge bonus for many or our previous winners, many needed additional IT
resources as well. The e-ffective Connection Award therefore gives community groups the
opportunity to choose an IT package which they really need. We hope this additional award
will encourage our winners to continue and expand their groups positive work in the
local community.
