Gardening Column, @ Sheringham PaperGARDENING

Bedding plants should be ready and in the soil with some peat and fertiliser. Non woody - stemmed plants should be growing fast. If slugs and snails are a problem plant some metaldehyde down to kill them off. If you have a problem with weeds place some weedkiller down when the weather is not so rainy.

De-bud dahlias and roses. Secateurs should be used to de-head any deadhead plants and cut back the leaves. Hydrangea cuttings can also be taken on un-flowered shoots, about 4 inches high. The seedbed, of wall plants, should be given a touch of lime and transplanted after you can see the third leaf. Tubs, Baskets and window boxes dry quickly so they need water and attention given to them. Baskets can also be soaked in water in a bucket occasionally.

Dear @ Sheringham,

Through your magazine may we send another big THANK YOU to everyone who attended our latest fund-raising Quiz Night we presented on 28th April at Weybourne Village Hall for Mary & Bunny Smith. We were overwhelmed by your response and all tickets were sold out a month before the event. Many thanks to all those who donated raffle prizes (59 in total) including many from local businesses. Special thanks for helping with fund raising on the night to Val Hartland, Vicky and Keith Hayward &co and all those un-sung heroes who helped us set up the hall and clearing away afterwards. The Champions for the Quiz were 'Young, Gifted and Grey' - the Runners-up 'The Waifs' and at the Booby Prize end, with nearly half points were 'Top-Farm Marsham'. The final amount raised and donated to the East Anglian Children's Hospices via Mary and Bunny was £283.43 - very well done everyone.

Many thanks folks for your continued support & loyalty attending our quizzes and other events - by helping us you are helping others. We already have many requests for tickets for our next event so, after the summer, watch this space for our adverts - we'll be back! Thanks again everyone from Jon and Thea Rowling, Weybourne

25th Summer evening Beer Train at North Norfolk Railway on 16th June 2007-05-14

In 2007 The Battle of Britain Locomotive Society, owners of Battle of Britain Class Pacific locomotive no.34081 "92 Squadron", will be celebrating 25 years of what has become an institution. The Society has been running these events annually in the summer to raise the all-important revenue needed to maintain and operate one of Oliver Bulleid's masterpieces. Over the years, the event has gained a loyal following for people who want a different night out. The emphasis is and always has been on an evening of fun for the family. This year will be no different but we have introduced some slight changes.   Firstly, "92 Squadron" will be running in a brand new, freshly painted BR Brunswick Green livery.  Secondly, a Traditional Hog Roast, Supplied by Local Family Butchers Graves of Holt, will be served on Weybourne station instead of the usual meal on the train. We will be maintaining the long established traditions of fine, specially produced real ales (no larger on our trains!) including 92 Squadron's own beer, supplied by Buntingford Brewery, and of course wines, spirits and soft drinks will be available from the cash bar. We have a local band, The Ugly Skiffle Combo, who will be entertaining everyone both on the train and whilst we enjoy the Hog Roast. We can promise newcomers and those who return every year a wonderful and enjoyable evening. We will return tom Sheringham NNR at 10pm just in time for those of you who want to catch the Anglia One train service to Norwich. There is also a much later service to Norwich if you want to stay and enjoy yourself for longer. We have been based on the award winning Poppy Line since the summer of 2005, we had a good start but due to unforeseen maintenance problems we have been out of traffic for the part 18 months. Thanks for the support from all at the North Norfolk Railway and our own volunteers, 34081 is now back in steam and running for all to enjoy.  If you would like to join in the fun and support our beloved locomotive, tickets are £12.50 per person or £10.00 for members of NNR/BBLS (production of membership number will be required on booking)
Tickets can be purchased from Sheringham station (NNR) on 01263 820800, or you can call Graham Johnston (BBLS) on 01263 381564 (evenings only).
