YOUR SAY
New from this issue we will be bringing you a National topic and asking you to let us
have your opinions on how it effects you or how you would solve it.
TOPIC:
What is your opinion on the new Home Information Pack
TOPIC RESPONSE:
What can I say, at last a night out where I can breathe clean air and not come home
smelling like an ashtray. Bring it forward to 1st June and make it illegal to light up
everywhere! SF
I am a non-smoker so I am quite looking forward to the new law. My only worry is what is
it going to cost me. The tax always goes up on tobacco, every budget that I can remember
and people in this country already pay a lot more than abroad. If people stop smoking,
where is the Government going to get this cash? I have no doubt that it will be from my
pocket.TS

Review of Audio Junkie by Tim Jefferson
A new band, well sort of: two fine local bands fused together, Hy Tide and
Blister. This would prove interesting to watch. The first thing to be noted was that the
front man role was going to be shared between Chris of Hy Tide and Lee of Blister. A new
ploy I'd not seen before but it worked. Apart from sharing the load it keeps the crowd
guessing. They're four piece: guitar 1/vocal; guitar 2/vocal; bass/vocal and drums and
described their stuff to be" danceable, memory jerking rock". They did a rocked
up version of "I will survive" which worked rather well. If you're a cover
number band you've limited options, one of which is stamping you're own sound onto a
well-known standard. You take a big risk but if you get it right you can bring the
audience closer. This time it worked. I seem to remember Blister doing a highly successful
hybrid of "Waterloo". Musicianship all round was good. Superb finger-style bass
and Lee's totally appropriate mix of rhythm, lead and lead fill is always a joy to behold
but they had problems. Daisy-chaining newly road tested P.A. speakers could have accounted
for the over taxed P.A. sound and the lack of deeply driven punch from the bass was
definitely down to a home made rig not being up to the Bass player's fantastic ability.
But these are small considerations in the face of what they achieved. The audience was
hungry and was for the first time fed two fast moving sets (at last). They were tight and
coupling that with the old magic touch of holding the audience in their hand, proved to be
the winning combination. They danced.........and kept on dancing. This was only their
fourth gig so they did very well. The first year of a band is a massive learning curve no
matter how experienced you are. I think we'll see you again! timjefferson@freeuk.com |
@ Sheringham,
It is a very serious allegation Jennifer Mold makes in her letter (Issue 74) namely
that "business owners and some residents" have produced "falsely obtained
figures" in the supermarket debate. Whilst she is rather coy about this, i.e. no
specific names, it has to be on record that neither Sheringham Campaign Against Major
Retail Over-Development, (SCAMROD), The Chamber of Trade or the Sheringham Preservation
Society have never produced false figures and this is a preposterous accusation to make
against those townspeople concerned about the impact a Tesco superstore will have on the
town's vitality. Where is the proof of any residents or business owners are doing this,
who are they and what figures did they produce? Facts please, Ms Mold! She also says that
"pro-supermarket residents find it difficult to speak out." Why is that?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, that is their undeniable right, but with defamatory
accusations like this, pro-Tesco people make it difficult for themselves. So - if Ms Mold
has no details to back this ridiculous allegation up, however generally she chooses to
pitch it, then a full retraction of this statement and a full apology is required. Please
note that all the above organisations pride themselves on their scrupulous handling of all
supermarket issues, to behave otherwise is just not in our structure or nature - or
interest. We await her prompt response.
Youth Group Helpers Wanted.
Local youth groups are in need of helpers to support their growing numbers of children.
You have to be willing to have a CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) check, which is
normal for anyone working with children these days, but you will understand that every
parent wants to know that their child is as safe as possible in all circumstances. It is
only a couple of hours a week and is an enjoyable way of teaching our children new things
and making new friends. It is FUN! If you want to know more about helping the youth in our
communities, especially Briston and Melton Constable then please call:- Sue - 01263 514482
