Sheringham Museum
Sheringham Museum is celebrating the successful acquisition of eight new paintings, all
of which have a story to tell of the town's maritime history and development. The
paintings are the work of local man Mick Bensley who had established an international
reputation as a marine artist, with examples of his work to be found in collections
throughout the world.
Mary Byth, chairman of the Museum Trustees, said today "When we heard these painting
were coming on the market we decided to do all we could to acquire them. She paid tribute
to the independent art charity, The Art Fund, who invited the museum to submit an
application for grant aid through its new "Enriching Regions" scheme to help in
the purchase of the paintings. The charity awarded a grant of £3925. "They have been
such a helpful and friendly body of people to deal with", she said, adding "It
is rewarding to know we have met all their requirements for without their help we would
not have been able to add these scenes to our growing collection of Mick Bensley
paintings. One of the conditions of the application for a Enriching Regions grant
was that the Museum should seek to obtain funding within its local community. Mary
expressed the Museum's gratitude and thanks to the businesses and organisations in
Sheringham who have made such generous donations to help achieve this successful result
and promised that all the paintings, together with other pictorial records charting
Sheringham's history and development will be on display when the town's new museum opens
at The Mo on the seafront next year.

SCOUT GROUP CELEBRATES ST GEORGE'S DAY
As is customary, Sheringham & Beeston Regis Sea Scout Group met with other groups
from the North East Norfolk District to celebrate St George's Day. Not only is he the
Patron Saint of England but also the Patron Saint of Scouting. The District event was
hosted this year by Buxton & Lammas Group and thankfully the weather was kind to us,
being overcast but warm and dry! Having assembled at Dudwick Hall, the procession, with
each group represented by all it's sections, marched through Buxton village, accompanied
by the Smokehouse Blues Jazz Band, and on to the Balay field. Following an open air
service, each section renewed it's Scouting Promise before breaking for lunch. An
afternoon of fun activities ensued, tailored to each sections age and abilities.
Beavers had a train ride on the Bure Valley Railway, a tour of the train sheds &
workshops, and games on the field. The Cubs had a train ride to Coltishall and a short
walk to Great Hautbois Guide Centre where they undertook with the Scouts a great range of
activities from abseiling, archery and rifle shooting to woggle making, brass rubbing and
craft skills.
The Scouts, being older, had the previous day been to Gransden Lodge Airfield near
Royston to take part in a day's gliding and complete their Scout Aeronautics Badge. A fun
weekend was had by all - and we look forward to Cromer hosting the annual celebration next
year.
Anyone wishing to join any section of Sheringham & Beeston Regis Sea Scout Group,
including the new Beaver Colony on a Friday should contact Jayne Burghall on 825644 who
