CATS PROTECTIONThe arrival of the four little kittens from the skip heralded the start of the "kitten season" for us this year. Several very young kittens have been handed into care that have been found with no sign of a mother and in most instances any littermates. Petal and Myrtle were both found in gardens and were only about 4 weeks old. Sparky and Petra (5 weeks old) were found in a garage and Suki (3 months old) was found wandering and in a poor condition. Two dear little tabby kittens were discovered in someone's shed and needed to come into care urgently because the person who found them was concerned for their safety as he had a dog which would harm them. At the time of writing we have also taken 5 kittens in from a farm and a further 5 came into care with their mother. The lady who found them has offered the mother cat a home. Another very young cat came into care heavily pregnant and she has now had 4 kittens. We were really concerned for this young mum, as she was not eating prior to having the kittens. Although she had no reserves to fall back on when she started to feed the kittens, which were quite small, mum and kittens are now making satisfactory progress. As well as all the kittens we have found homes for several of the adult cats. These included Purdy, Ninja and Blade who had all been homed by us when kittens and had been reluctantly returned because their owners' circumstances had changed and they could not keep them. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please call Stephanie on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit http://www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving her a call on the above number. SHERINGHAM LOKE GROUPOn Saturday, 30 June, the newly-formed Sheringham Loke Group held its first litter pick and stream safari along Sheringham's Back Loke. With the help of UK RiverCare's Greg Hall (and a load of equipment donated by Anglian Water), volunteers hauled more than 10 bags of rubbish -including a broken skateboard, a waterlogged mobile phone, a snapped fishing rod, several discarded shoes, smashed dishes, old scaffolding poles and scores of empty crisp and sweet packets-from the stream bed and banks.
Once they'd finished the cleanup, the group spent some time looking for wild inhabitants of the stream, getting up-close-and-personal looks at a surprising variety of small invertebrates. Among the finds were lots of tiny freshwater shrimp, many mayfly larvae, a scattering of camouflaged caddisfly larvae and a wriggling host of small worms and leeches. A stickleback (a small species of fish) and at least one frog were also spotted. The group plans another cleanup in mid-autumn. Watch for details! Megan Crewe JENNIFER ANNE STEVENS

Sheringham ShantymenIt's that time of year when all our practice over the winter months pays off. Most weekends until November will have us traveling all over to entertain in our unique way. We have just returned from our 3rd annual appearance at Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival where we met up with some old friends and a number of people from North Norfolk on holiday. Although the weekend was very damp it was a great success. Over the next few weeks we will be singing at Kings Lynn, Wells, Cromer,
Sheringham, Gt. Yarmouth, and Norwich to name a few. In October we have been invited to
Wicklow, Ireland where the inshore lifeboat we bought for the RNLI will be named 'The
Sheringham Shantymen'. Already we are hearing of rescues beyond the call of duty,
including the saving of a sheep. For the time being we will be practicing on a Thursday as usual at The Lobster, but our avid fans and followers should watch this space for any changes. For further information on the Sheringham Shantymen regarding concerts,
CD's or how to contact us check out our website on www.shantymen.com Battle of Britain Wings Week AppealIf any of your readers or their families were members of the Royal Air Force, this is a special appeal for them to help us raise £12,000, our target for this year. When the Branch won the President's Cup last year it was described as the
most effective and efficient Branch in the UK. We have in light of these comments raised
last years record collection from £10,250 to £12,000. Hence his special appeal for help. On Sunday 16 September our Battle of Britain Service will be held at St
Peter's, Sheringham at 3.00pm. The Church Parade will commence from Station Approach at
2.30pm and all ex-service and other associations will be welcome to join us. SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT CHAMBER OF TRADE AND COMMERCE
