GARDENING
Sweet Pea lovers can start a new cycle by sowing in the open ground late this month,
afterwards covering the seedling with cloches, once they are established they should only
need to be protected from severe weather. Keep your dahlias flowering by deadheading them.
This is a good month for planting evergreens and you can now take rose cuttings.
Sow early maturing carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, onion and winter spinach. As for your
lawns, mowing should be less frequent, but carry on with the aeration. New beds and
borders to be made should be dug now. Give your hedges one last clip.
Lifeboat Open Day
Sunday 26th August
at Sheringham Lifeboat Station
between 10.30am and4.00pm.
The day aims to promote the brand new Atlantic 85 lifeboat and the vital role it performs
on the North Norfolk coast, and heighten the public's awareness of the station and its
functions. The day is an opportunity for the general public to come and visit the station,
view the boat, meet the crew and for the crew to demonstrate the boats capabilities.
Not only is it an opportunity for the public to view the boat but it is also an
opportunity to see how we work with other organisations and to see how we fit in 'the
bigger picture', with displays and demonstrations from ourselves and HM Coastguard. There
will also be static displays from Sheringham Museum Trust, Sheringham RNLI Lifeguards, a
selection of Jet Skis and a performance from Sheringham Shantymen.

Garden Party in Aid of Sheringham Museum
On Saturday 14th July 2007 Shirley and Harold Thomas opened their doors for a garden
party with all proceeds going towards the Sheringham Museum.
Amongst the days attractions included home-made cakes, bric-a-brac stall, raffle, tombola,
hand-painted china plus many more items from the museum shop; all this for a modest
admission price of £2.00 which also included refreshments.
Harold
stood firmly on the platform as he demonstrated his working model railway, whilst Brian
Cowing had kindly brought along his model boats for viewing.
Daniel Thomas age 7, organised 'guess the name of the cat' at 50p a go, and to end the
afternoons entertainment the Mayor of Sheringham arrived just in time to draw the raffle
prizes and enjoy a piece of Mary Reeves melt-in-the mouth lemon drizzle cake.
Shirley and Harold would like to express their gratitude to all who were involved in
making the afternoon run so smoothly.
All together a fabulous afternoon of entertainment and even the weather was kind as it was
a lovely sunny afternoon, it was well worth the time and effort as £416.00 was raised for
the Sheringham Museum fund.
Flood siren success
Trevor Ivory welcomes support from senior County Councillors for the upgrading of
Norfolk's coastal flood sirens. Following a meeting with senior County Councillors and
flood wardens yesterday, the Conservative Spokesman for North Norfolk, Trevor Ivory, welcomed the
positive discussion. "The ultimate decision on the retention of the flood sirens
rests with the Norfolk Resilience Forum - which includes the Norfolk Constabulary - and
the Environment Agency, but the County Council is a key member of the NRF and its support
for the flood wardens campaign to retain and upgrade the network is an important step
forward. The Councillors must now take the discussion back to their colleagues, but the
meeting was very constructive and I am confident that the County Council will now throw
its weight behind us on this issue." |
