SHERINGHAM HIGH SCHOOLI was invited along to an end of term event at the High School. This was to celebrate the school's first year of "Arts College Status". I've already mentioned the amazing transformation of the school's hall into a beautiful theatre, so the stage was set. Three schools that feed the high school (Holt Primary School, Kelling Primary and Sheringham Primary) came to make the event happen. Basically the story revolved around a little girl's visit to the home of an old Mariner. As she discovered his old sea chest, she asked him about the origins of each of the strange things inside. With the girl and the Mariner below stage, the lights would dim as he recounted each story. The stage would come alive with what each school had prepared to enact the mariner's travels. It was well done and the children were great. I particularly enjoyed the clever way they created the sea with a long sheet held across the stage. The Shantymen had been invited to add the perfect musical addition to the evening. The whole evening was peppered with their seafaring songs. It was a lovely evening. As usual, a lot of hard work went into this. Apart from each school's preparations, the sections for the Mariner and Jessica (the little girl) were scripted by Sean O'Brien and Katherine Featherstone. Great contributions were made by The Shantymen, community dancers, musicians and actors. Sheringham Little Theatre, Sheringham Community Wardrobe and Norwich Theatre Projects (who provided the Mariner) added professional support. Our thanks as usual to the wonderful Kathryn Flynn (Head of drama) for pulling it all together. A good night. timjefferson@freeuk.com SHERINGHAM PARKSunday 16th September |
