SHERINGHAM IN BLOOM WIN AGAIN

On Wednesday 12 September, three members of the Sheringham in Bloom team travelled to Ipswich to learn that Sheringham had won a Silver Gilt award in the prestigious Anglia in Bloom competition.

Last year Sheringham won a Silver Gilt award, as a finalist in the Britain in Bloom competition and this latest accolade has consolidated their position as one of the foremost floral towns in the area. In a very difficult year for gardens around the coast, no Gold awards were given and the only other Anglian coastal towns to receive this top award were Hunstanton, Felixstowe and Great Yarmouth.

Among the other special awards was a Silver Gilt to the Sheringham Evening W. I. for the "One" Station garden. The Weybourne Road Allotment Association was shortlisted for the "Grown Your "Own" award but were pipped at the post by the Norwich entry.

The judges, who visited Sheringham in July, were particularly impressed with Otterndorf Green, the new Heritage Walk, the town's many flower displays and the cleanliness thoughout. They also commented on the ongoing developments to Oddfellows Hall and the Sensory/Physic garden at the Health Centre, which they look forward to seeing next year.

The chairman of Sheringham in Bloom, Joan Thame, said she was delighted with the award for the town and for the team who had worked so hard over the last few years to achieve this recognition. The goal now is to push just that little bit harder and to go on to achieve the ultimate recognition of a Gold Award, which is now well within our grasp.

Karen Bethell

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb trying out some fancy footwork with a North Walsham morris dancing side, and a couple of Mundesley Scouts peeping cheekily through an old tyre are just two of the scenes depicted in an exhibition of photographs taken by North Norfolk News reporter Karen Bethell, which opened at Sheringham Little Theatre on September 3.   Karen, who joined the EDP's sister paper as a community reporter in 2000, took up photography as a hobby while living in Scotland 15 years ago.  "Like many parents, I started taking pictures when my children were born, but after a friend asked me to be her wedding photographer, I thought it might be something I could be quite good at," she explained.

Her growing passion for photography and a love of writing saw her launch her own free arts and entertainment magazine after she moved to Sheringham in 1993, and, after being offered the job of North Norfolk News reporter, she saw an opportunity to further develop her photography and writing skills.

"As well as allowing me to carry on doing the two things I love most, working for the News also gave me a chance to get to know the local area and to meet an enormous number of interesting people, many of whom have become friends," she said.   While Yorkshire-born Karen finds inspiration for her pictures in the Norfolk coast and countryside, she says she leaves the atmospheric Norfolk landscapes to the experts.   "One of the nicest things about my job is that I get to take pictures of a whole range of people from all walks of life and that is what I enjoy doing most," she said.

"And whereas reporters and photographers usually work in tandem, I have to do both the interviewing and the photography. This gives me time to build up a real rapport with people, which, I hope, shows in my pictures.

North Norfolk Folk, an exhibition of photographs of local people by North Norfolk News reporter Karen Bethell, is at Sheringham Little Theatre from September 3-29. For more information, phone 01263 823633 or the theatre box office on 01263 822347.
