Help keep blood stocks ticking.
To ensure patients get the lifesaving transfusions they need throughout October the
National Blood Service (NBS) must see at least 8,000 people walk through their doors every
day.
This may sound a lot, but in fact it's only 5 per cent of people who could give blood
actually doing so up to three-times-a-year.
Gareth Bell, Communications Officer for the NBS, said, "As autumn gets in full flow
and the weather begins to turn we find more and more of our regular donors are unable to
donate due to common colds and in some cases flu. It is easy to think this does not have
an impact on blood stocks but with only a relatively small proportion of people giving
blood stocks can fall which is why we are constantly looking for new donors''. Following
numerous recruitment drives by the NBS this summer blood stocks still stand at 6 days
supply- slightly below levels the Service would like. Blood is required by 310 hospitals
across England and north Wales and is used for anything from treatment for cancer to
routine hip and knee replacements. Blood is used so frequently that in a recent survey one
in ten people said they had received blood themselves. Mr Bell added,'' Current blood
stocks of around 6 day's supply are adequate to ensure hospitals get all the blood they
need but as winter approaches collections and stocks will fall without renewed support.
Blood can be needed by anyone at any time so please pick up the phone, book an
appointment, and help save a life this autumn'' In most cases anyone aged 17-59, who
weighs over 7st 12lbs(50kg) in general good health, can give blood. Blood donors are asked
to give every 16 weeks- that's just three times a year. For further information, and to
book an appointment to give blood locally, please contact the NBS helpline on 0845 7711
711 or log on to www.blood.co.uk. It is strongly
recommended that you book an appointment.

Skate Park Rebuild
The Sheringham Skate Park Committee is delighted to announce the recent
award of grant funding from the Local Network Fund. This funding will be used to improve
shelter, lighting, and provide litter & recycling bins to the park. As part of the
ongoing project plan, the Committee is about to start a series of essential updates to the
park, including:
1. Structural repairs
2. Resurfacing
3. Safety and insurance audits
Work is due to start by the end of September - during this time the park will NOT be
available for use by the public. Contractors will be attending the site to remove
materials, rebuild sections, and add new facilities. The Committee asks that all park
users, parents, and locals avoid the skatepark area until maintenance has been completed.
As part of the project planning, The Committee has started dialogue with PC Emma Drew of
Norfolk Constabulary, with a view to improving the social aspect of skatepark usage and
gauging project successes over time. Other interested parties can contact the Committee
with ideas or views.
The Sheringham Skate Park Committee would like to hear from all those who have positive or
negative comments on the project - it's vitally important that the whole town has a say in
this project. Visit www.sheringhamskate.co.uk
for details, call Rob Sayles on 07950 650538, or drop in to the SheringhamPlus shop.
