Fall into the habit of giving blood.

Summer's swiftly come and gone and autumn's descended upon the country the leaves might have changed from green to gold but the demand for blood remains constant. And it is during this time of year that the National Blood Service is appealing to new and returning donors to fall into the habit of giving blood.

NBS spokesperson Melissa Pang said; '' With the days becoming shorter, it's understandable that donors would be more hard-pressed to find time to give blood. But shorter days does not mean less demand- hospitals across Essex and East London need up to 250 units of blood every day to help patients. This is an easier target to reach if new and existing donors make a habit of giving blood every 16 weeks'' ''With our new appointments system, donating regularly is now a lot more convenient. Donors just need to bring their diary along when giving blood, and book a date for their next donation. This is a step in helping to optimise the number of times each person can give blood. Every donation made is a selfless act that's sure to put a smile on the faces of patients during this melancholic period'' To give a pint, you should be aged between 17-60 years of age, in general good health and weigh over 7st 12lbs. Regular donors can give blood up to 70 years of age. Donors can ring the National Donor Helpline on 0845 7 711711 (open 24 hrs) or visit www.blood.co.uk to register their details, find the venues and times for their nearest blood donation session and book an appointment.

SHERINGHAM EVENING W.I.

At our well-attended Annual Meeting, we reviewed a very successful year, during which we celebrated our 30th Birthday, and were much involved in local community activities and county events. It was a busy year of fund-raising, not only for ourselves, but for the benefit of local charities. Most recently, we hosted an superb Fashion Show arranged by Olive Kinsley of Dots and Olivia's at St Andrew's Methodist Church Hall. The packed audience viewed a range of fashions to suit every size and taste. At the conclusion of the show, Marian Clark, President of the W.I. presented Madeleine Skipper, Appeal Co-ordinator for Balloons4Hearts with a cheque for £500, which included proceeds from the Bargain Charity Stall in the summer and from the Fashion Show. The Appeal, which is well on the way to achieving its aim of raising £1m, will provide a new specialist theatre at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital to avoid patients travelling to Papworth for vital surgery.   Photograph enclosed shows (left to right) Madeleine Skipper, Olive Kinsley and Marian Clark.
