WINTER WALKS PROGRAMME

I would like to tell you that because of your advertisement we have had several new walkers since we started back after Christmas. I would be very grateful if you would keep publishing the walks and if you could include my details so that people could contact me for full programmes or information.

The walking programme is just the beginning. We have received funding from Lloyds pharmacy and others for two years to provide activities and get people active. We are beginning a cycle programme in April and plan to have dancing and keep fit classes starting in the summer. We already have a tea-dance running regularly at the Copeman Centre in Briston on a Tuesday afternoon from 2-4 – this is £2.00 and includes a variety of ballroom, Latin and old time dancing with refreshments provided. We now have 17 active walk leader volunteers and are always looking for volunteers to not only help with the walks but also for future ventures such as cycling.

The Fit Together Programme is free and its main objective is getting people active.

There's more to Scottish Malt Whisky than we realised.

Thursday 14th January was a very cold, wet day, however 35 members of the Kelling Probus Club enjoyed a well-cooked meal which was appropriate for the day. A piping hot Steak and Mushroom Pie, served with fresh vegetables followed by Chocolate Profiteroles, just the job!  Two guests joined members at the Pheasant Hotel in Kelling, namely, Mike Elson and Ian Robertson both keen golfers from Sheringham Golf Club. They were able to enjoy a very knowledgeable and interesting talk about many aspects of Scottish Malt Whiskey given by Mr John Neller a very distinguished member of the club. He started by reminding us that "Whiskey" is of course Irish or what some Americans would think is Scotch!!

The malt whiskey business is changing, in the 1950's DCL had 147 distilleries producing 144 different malts and they alone produced malt whiskey. The large markets at that time were USA, Canada, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Since then the malt whiskey business has grown 5 fold and DCL is now a small part of Pernod of France. When tasting malt whiskey to gain full advantage of the aroma/flavour, a little water should be added. For malts up to 8 years, just add slightly less water than the amount of whiskey, but for a really mature one, then just add a teaspoon of water to gain full flavour benefit.

We learned how malts gain their distinctive colour and flavour, that they only mature in cask, that malts come from either the Highlands, the Lowlands, the Island or from Campbeltown. Interestingly, Larner/Bakers in Holt stock up to 40 different malts with 20 more obtainable. A bottle of Dewar's 1962 Malt was sold for £27,000 in the States. John informed us of much more interesting information. Rohan Fennell who also has great knowledge of malts gave a vote of thanks in which he declared he had gained extra knowledge and thanked John for his very interesting talk.

Remember to give Terry Penrose a call on 01263 588772 if you would like to join our club and he will tell you all about us. We meet at 12.30 at the Pheasant Hotel for lunch on the third Thursday.  Mr Alan Chapman our Chairman, was delighted that a record number of members and their guests sat down for Christmas Lunch. Members were reminded about next month's meeting on 21st February when Matthew Knowles, son of member Sam Knowles, will be talking about "The Stock Exchange".
