£90m improvement plan for homes in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex

Thousands of affordable homes across Norfolk, Suffolk and North Essex are to be improved and upgraded by Eastern Procurement Consortium, a major new consortium that represents key housing organisations across the region. The works programmes are expected to be worth in excess of £90 million over the next four to six years.

The consortium, consisting of Freebridge Community Housing, Havebury Housing Partnership, North Norfolk Housing Trust, Orwell Housing Association and Saffron Housing Trust, together with Colne Housing Society, Cotman Housing Association and Suffolk Housing Society, has already received Government funding to prepare an overall business plan. It is one of only 12 consortiums nationally to be helped by Government in this way and the only one in the East Region.

Improvement programmes such as new kitchens and bathrooms, door and window replacements, new or upgraded central heating and electrical rewiring will be implemented over the next four to six years. Work is expected to start in September this year.

"We are planning a massive programme of improvements across the region," said Steve Tyree, Head of Eastern Procurement Consortium. "These improvements will both improve and maintain all housing owned by our eight organisations at or beyond the decent homes standard.

"By joining together to undertake this work, we will achieve better value in terms of efficiency and buying power than any single organisation could achieve on its own. We have a large budget but there is much to be done to ensure we get the best value for money possible. At the moment, we are requesting Expressions of Interest from contractors and we expect to receive a considerable response."

As well as residents, local trades people are also expected to benefit from the programme as it will ensure security of work over a long period.

Dear Editor

I would like to say Thank You to everyone who helped me on Thursday 3rd January 08 outside the Old Post Office in Sheringham, when I took a tumble and waited with me until the Paramedics arrived. (especially the gentleman who went and got my daughter).

The offer of coats from total strangers and blankets from nearby shops was really appreciated on a cold day and renewed ones faith in people and Sheringham! Currently nursing bruises to ones thigh and pride! But again many thanks to everyone.
Barbara.
Nice to know the good guys are out there!

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank you for advertising recent events which we held for the Langham Church General Fund. The Christmas Fair raised £715 and the 'Double Octave' Concert raised £327.26. Both events were most enjoyable and we must thank everyone for their help and support. The concert was a wonderful evening of music, song, mulled wine and mince pies! If you missed it, you missed a treat. Charpentier’s Christmas Mass - Messe de Minuit pour Noel and carols with audience participation, provided a well balanced programme to please everyone. Recorder solos by Philppa Press and vocal solos by Linda Phelps were absolutely marvellous.

Double Octave are a great group of people and their action of going round to charities and performing concerts to raise money for them at no charge has to be highly commended. Credit must also go to Travis Perkins who sponsor the group. Thank you to all those who came along to support the event. If anyone is interested, they are in need of tenors in the choir. Ann Sherriff. (01328 830605)

Sheringham Hall - the human story

White's 1836 directory simply records that Abbot Upcher had constructed at Sheringham "a large and elegant mansion of white brick, overlooking a fine bay of the ocean". This otherwise reliable source does not tell us, however that Upcher's distraught widow Charlotte could never bear to live there with their six young children. Sheringham Hall and Park, designed by John Adey and Humphrey Repton in 1812, languished unlived-in and unloved following the untimely death of its owner in 1819. Charlotte documented her sorrow in her journal, vowing to mourn for five years. In 1820 she wrote "I went over the new building, he should have been so happy, but so he shall in a better world," promising, "I shall join you dearest love."

Liz Larby is researching the history of this elegant Regency mansion and is eager to consult a wide selection of sources, formal and personal, written and oral, in order to present the human story behind the bricks and mortar. If you have lived or worked in the hall and would be willing to share your memories with her, Liz would be pleased to hear from you at 2 Crossway Terrace, Acle, Norwich, NR13 3QT or email liz.larby@tiscali.co.uk.
