Health Matters

You may be saying, "Why is he discussing spinal problems with babies, surely babies do not have these types of health issues at such a young age?"

Dr Michael. J. I'Anson, Creative Chiropractic, Holt, NorfolkThe fact is that the birthing process is traumatic for both the mother and the baby and spinal tension can occur in both. This tension in the young can present in various ways: - a baby only feeding on one side as they are unable to turn their head the other way or unable to rest when lying on their back or even sitting. However, almost all parents will know about one particular ailment and that is a child suffering from Infantile Colic which is described as a baby having a persistent, often violent spell of crying which exists in an otherwise health baby. I have also often heard it called 'irritable parent syndrome' due to the lack of sleep that both parents suffer from at this time!

What is Colic: There have been a number of theories proposed as to the reasons for colic. However, most medical and chiropractic authors believe that infantile colic is a reaction to pain which is probably related to the intestinal region. While the exact mechanisms of this pain remain somewhat unclear, some research has suggested a nerve related element. This is backed up by clinical observations that have demonstrated a striking success rate for the resolution of colic after chiropractic adjustment.

Managing a baby with Colic: This involves identifying and correcting the spinal level that is often causing the problem. This is usually found in the upper spine under the skull but problems can also exist in the mid-back and around the pelvic areas. I have found that after just a handful of treatments, the problem is significantly eased. This is in keeping with research studies that also show resolution of colicky symptoms after an average of three treatments. As well as manipulation, other factors need to be considered with a colicky baby such as protein intolerance and allergy, carbohydrate intolerance and gastroesophageal reflux (vomiting).

Summary: This is a topic very close to many parents' heart and one that I could write pages about!

BURNS NIGHT SUCCESS FOR ROTARY CLUB

Over fifty people attended a Burns Night Supper held by the Rotary Club of Aylsham at The Greens Freehouse, Norwich Road, Aylsham on Thursday the 31st January 2008. Members of the club brought their wives and guests to a first class meal of Arbroathe Smokey (a smoked haddock), haggis with neaps and tatties and a selection of desserts followed by a 'wee dram'.

Rotary Club of Aylsham

President Philip Green and his wife Mary sat at the top table with guests as a piper from the Norwich pipe band escorted the haggis into the room carried by John Fuller of Cawston who is the Head Chef at The Greens.  The food was delicious and was much appreciated by all, the haggis was duly addressed and served and after the meal was over there was pipe music and a Scottish guest and his wife got up to assist with a highland fling.

The Burns Night was a 'first' for The Greens (as far back as anyone there can remember) and was considered a great success and bound to be repeated.
