IN THE GREENHOUSE.

Early to mid spring is an awkward time in the
Greenhouse. The weather can vary from very warm to icy cold, and deciding how much ventilation is required can be a problem. Mostly it is a question of common sense, bearing in mind that too much ventilation is preferable to too little.

The ideal conditions for most greenhouse plants involve the free circulation of warm, moist air and as steady a temperature as possible. A hot, humid atmosphere with little or no ventilation is the conditions that invite fungus disease.

On cold nights the greenhouse is closed down completely, but during the day the top ventilator should be opened an inch or so on cold, dull days, and more if the sun is out for long stretches.

PICKING OUT THE TOMATOES.

If the tomato seedlings have germinated take them out of the propagator and get ready to transplant them. If the second pair of leaves is just unfurling, then they are ready to be transferred singly into peat pots containing potting compost.

The difference between seed and potting composts is that the latter is quite a bit stronger, it has a higher concentration of plant food, and enough to keep the young plant growing stronger until it is ready for its final planting.

You will notice that the second and subsequent leaves that form are of a different shape from the first pair, which are the cotyledon or seed leaves. The latter's function is to start the plant life and their usefulness is finished once the true leaves take over. Always handle a seedling by its rounded cotyledons or seed leaves.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

On 5th March members of North Norfolk Photographic Society (NoNoPS) met for the first time in their new home, the Loades Hall adjoining the Methodist Church in Holt.  It was found to be very comfortable and highly suitable for the purpose which on this occasion was the club’s Annual Print Competition. Whilst for all other competitions in the year, images entered previously cannot be entered again, the object of this one is to find the best of the year - so the restriction does not apply and each member can enter up to 3 of any of this year’s prints.   This produced a phenomenal entry of over 70 prints, and it fell to Gary Hacon - an old friend of the Society - to judge them. This he did with his usual care and humour, whittling it all down to 3 prints, from which he chose as winner Alan Dedman’s ‘Cold Morning’ - a stunning black and white landscape scene full of moody tones and textures.

Gary then had to choose between this and the image of an Arctic Tern by John Cucksey that had won the slides section of the competition a few weeks before. His decision went to Alan Dedman and so it is ‘Cold Morning’ that will be reproduced on the Society’s Programme cover next season.  On 19th March the members of NoNoPS (North Norfolk Photographic Society) met for only the second time in their new venue, Loades Hall, Holt.

Contests between Camera Clubs are often called ‘Battles’ - and the indomitable Jim Till led his Brancaster Brigands into battle against North Norfolk’s Holt Hordes!   Umpire for this occasion, Derek Leak, came with his wife Judy. Old friends of NoNoPS, Judy and Derek are highly respected photographers and Derek is a well known and very well regarded Judge.  Derek’s task was to judge an equal number of prints and slides from each club, awarding each a mark out of 10. There were a number of “10’s” and almost all the others were 7’s, 8’s and 9’s - testament to what Derek Leak described as the very high standard of the entries from both Societies.  The result was a win for North Norfolk - to their delight! With Prints they won by 99 marks to 90, and with slides it was a 90-90 draw - making NoNoPS the overall winners by 189 to 180.  The Society meets again on Wednesday 2nd April, at the Loades Hall, Holt, and will hold a Photo Forum, when people are asked to bring photographs and/or slides for discussion and comment and in particular to air any problems (photographic ones, anyway) they are having and for which other members may be able to help find a solution. This is a change from the published programme: the planned Photoshop Evening with Norman Laughland will now be on Wednesday 30th April.

Further details of the Society’s activities and examples of members’ photographs can be found at www.nonops.org, the Society’s website.
