Herbaceous Plants in the Flower Garden.

Our gardens would look rather sad places without the herbaceous plants that flower most particularly
In late summer (from mid July onwards) when there are few flowering shrubs left and we must depend on perennials and roses for colour in the garden. All Annuals and Biennials are strictly speaking Herbaceous-all the word means is that the stems are of only Annual Duration and die down each Autumn, so that in that sense even Bulbs are Herbaceous- but the term is usually used of Herbaceous-Perennials. Perennials are plants that go on growing for many seasons, increasing in Dimensions as they do so they are normally planted either in the autumn or in the early spring, although there are one or two exceptions. Caring for Herbaceous plants to fit any soil or situation, But the Majority will be perfectly happy in a soil that is reasonably deep and not inclined to water- logging. Most like full sunlight, although it is possible to grow Bog Plants and Shade- lovers where conditions allow. Helleborys Niger (The Christmas rose) is the earliest flowering of our selection. It grows on the edge of Wood lands in the wild, so a position giving dappled shade is ideal. Almost all the Hellebores are somewhat greedy plants, so the soil cannot be too rich. The white flowers will emerge from the ground at any time from early winter to early spring (November- February) and the new leaves start to emerge at the same time. Later the leaves are going to be quite large, so a position among or just in front of shrubs should prove very suitable.

WHIT WEEKEND FUN FOR THE KIDS - HELPING TO RUN THE POPPY LINE

In the first-ever event of its kind, the Poppy Line is offering children the chance to help run the railway and learn more about what goes on behind the scenes.

"Altogether Now!" is happening on the Saturday and Sunday May 24/25 of the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend - though as an historic railway, the Poppy Line sticks to the traditional Whit weekend terminology!

Poppy Line volunteers will help the children to "have-a-go" at things like flagging a train away, getting their hands on the signalbox levers, and even making their own special picnic with Cherry Bakewell.

There'll also be rides in a guard's van, the chance to make a train collage, and face-painting and storytelling.

On both days, steam trains run every 45 minutes from Sheringham and Holt. Normal fares apply - no increase over last year, with all day hop-on, hop-off Rover tickets at £9.50 adult, £6.00 child, £8.50 senior citizen and £29 family (2 adults + 2 kids, or 3 adults + 1 child). Dogs and cycles are just £1 each.

It promises to be a uniquely different family weekend - and one that will give the kids memories to treasure. Maybe some of them will join the Railway as volunteers in the Poppy Line Junior Club!
