SCHOOL SCIENCE PROJECT A FIRST FOR POPPY LINE
The North Norfolk Railway is introducing a pioneering educational project geared to
National Curriculum Science key stage 3. Developed in partnership with Norfolk Museums
Service and the science department of Sheringham High School, the project will give
students the opportunity of examining the role of science in everyday life, based on the
themes of energy, motion, velocity and direction.
Jenny Brinkhurst, Education Officer on the Poppy Line, said: "This is the first time
such a project has been attempted on a heritage railway, and we are immensely grateful to
our partners who have provided the funding and advice that made it possible, and to our
volunteers who have put together such an exciting and varied programme of scientific
investigation."
Students will investigate how steam can be used to produce energy, and will examine
aspects of a train's motion and speed. They'll also explore the efficiency of various fuel
sources to judge the effectiveness of coal as a steam engine fuel.
Sheringham High School pupils will be the first to tackle the project, funded by
Renaisssance Museum Development Fund, at its launch on 26th June this year. |
