KELLING PROBUS CLUB.

Is there a Doctor in the House?

The answer to this question was an emphatic '' YES'' Dr Margaret Foot gave an excellent talk about the Reminiscences of a General Practitioner to 25members of the club at their monthly luncheon and meeting. Having been in the profession for some 50 years Margaret had a wealth of experiences and stories to impart. Most of her time was spent in the delightful area of South Croydon but latterly for 10years she was associated with the Holt Medical Practice. There had been major changes in the treatment of patients and for example she illustrated this by the treatment of cataracts. Whereas 30 years ago a patient would have to lock their head in one position for some 4 weeks or so after this serious operation nowadays after 1 hours surgery the treatment was finished.
The introduction of antibiotics in 1967 radically changed the treatment of life threatening illnesses into good health in a short time. Margaret continued her talk covering topics such as; Heart sick patients' heart surgery, drugs, abortion, hip replacement, blood pressure, mental hospitals maternity, Her most amusing memory was when a 23 stone lady sat on chamber pot which disintegrated and she had to put 237 stitches into a very large bottom.

Member Ken Richards gave a vote of thanks and suggested that Margaret write a book to encapsulate her experiences.

A visit to Newmarket and the National Stud and a visit to England's first whisky distillery at Thetford will take place early next year.

As always next month's meeting will be at the Pheasant Hotel in Kelling when the speaker will be member Vic Allen talking about '' Anything which comes into his Head'' We always meet at 12,30 pm on the third Thursday in each month, namely17th July next month. BIGGER AND BETTER BEER FESTIVAL ON THE POPPYLINE

The midsummer NORTH NORFOLK RAILWAY BEER Festival at the Poppy Line's Sheringham Station is now firmly established in the beer (and rail) enthusiasts' calendar. This year's Festival the seventh, promises to be bigger and better than ever.

There'll be over 70 different beers on offer, including some from newly- established micro-breweries. And while East Anglian ales predominate, the Festival showcases beers from all over the country. This year the festival moves to platform 2 to provide more space for comfortable ale- supping. It runs from Friday July 18th to Sunday July 20th and is open from 11.00am to 11.00pm on the first two days, closing at 4.30pm on the Sunday. On all three days steam and vintage diesel trains will be operating. The first train is a diesel at 9.45am from Sheringham, followed by a steam train at 10.30am. Then there are alternate diesel and steam trains every 45 minutes through the day till 3.45pm .The live entertainment takes on new look.

On Friday, the Classic Dixieland trio provides lunchtime music, with the Kingsize Papas Swing band in action during the evening. Old favourities the Ugly Dog Skiffle Combo takes care of Saturday and Floydian Slip perform on the final day.

New,too, is a special Festival polo shirt on sale, together with the usual souvenir pint glasses. Organiser Nessa Pritchard says, "We expect glasses and shirts to sell out pretty quickly- so if you want a souvenir, get there early". The frequent service on the Bittern Line from Norwich via North Walsham to Sheringham means that Festival goers can safely drink without driving; the last train back at night is the 11.46pm from the Bittern Line just across the road.
