Sheringham Skate Park

Skate park update

As previously posted through local press, partner agencies, and our own signage, the Sheringham Skate Park is still under construction (reconfiguring ramp structures, reapplying ply 'skins', tidy and clearing the site, and improving safety elements).

We started this operation last year, but have been set back by some serious contractor and material supply issues, coupled with a run of poor weather. The main problem has come from the application of the marine ply 'skin', which forms the skatable surface. This process requires high-grade marine ply, intensive labour, and several days of clear weather - our recent attempts to lay the ply over the reconfigured skeleton has resulted in water damage and additional cost/time lag.

Sheringham Skate Park

Unfortunately, a young skater was injured at the park last week - he is fine now, but NNDC have taken the steps to seal off the park perimeter with a security fence. This is a move endorsed by the Skate Park Committee, as it allows us to continue construction (as the weather allows) without intrusion or risk of further injury to skaters.

It is, and has always been, our intention to complete this phase of work as soon as possible. Once we have completed, we will request a full H&S and insurance audit to allow us to formally reopen the facility. We will also organise a grand re-opening to the skaters and public, with as much publicity as possible to raise the project profile.

Until that time, we'd like to reassert the following:
- the park is closed
- construction will continue until further notice
- all issues of vandalism, park access, and security should be passed to Sheringham Police SNT
- the park will reopen after H&S/insurance has been approved and is in place

The Committee has a larger plan in mind for the project, involving public consultancy, complete park redesign & rebuild, and regular events. This forms Phase 2; for now, we must concentrate on reopening the park as it currently stands, and see how the coming 6 months fare.

The Sheringham Skate Park Committee would like to hear from all those who have the enthusiasm to join the project - it's vitally important that the whole town has a say.

THE POPPY LINE GOES TO WAR!

If you want to know what it was like on the Home Front in the dark days of the 1940s, then visit the Poppy Line on Saturday and Sunday, September 20th and 21st.

The North Norfolk Railway's famous '40s Weekend is once again set to attract crowds who want to experience the atmospheric sights, sounds and smells of a country railway during World War II.

Visitors are warned to beware of spivs (a wartime name for sharp-suited businessmen on the windy side of the law, said to be a backward slang version of VIPs), and asked to give every help to members of the armed forces on duty.

Britain's famous stiff upper lip will be well in evidence, with jitterbugging and music up and down the line casting a snook at Herr Hitler's aspirations. GIs join with Tommies as they ride the train back to camp, Women's Land Army volunteers keep supplies coming, and brew-ups and Spam in the NAAFI help keep body and soul together.

The event is supported by re-enactment societies from all over the country, and their period dress and vintage vehicles add superb touches of realism to the scene on the trains and on the stations.

There's a fleamarket at Holt, with stalls selling all manner of 1940s clothing, uniforms and ephemera. And on the Sunday, weather and operational conditions permitting, it's hoped that a Spitfire or Hurricane from the Battle of Britain flight will make a low-level pass over the line.

On the Saturday evening, everyone lets their hair down at a party on Sheringham Station - admission £1, with live entertainment and plenty of food and drink on sale.

Says marketing director Colin Borg: "We hope as many people as possible will come in period dress to add to the genuine flavour of the '40s that makes this event so special."

All day hop-on, hop-off Rover tickets are just £12 adult, £8 child 5-15 (under 5s are free), £11 senior citizen and £34 family (2 adults + 2 kids, or 3 adults + 1 child). Platform tickets are £1 a head at every station. Full details at www.nnrailway.co.uk
