CURLEY ORGAN CONCERT RAISES £2,800

Around £2,800 was raised from the Carlo Curley charity organ concert organised by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club on Thursday, September 4. The money will go to Polio Plus - Rotary International’s main charity - to help in the final push towards the eradication of polio world-wide.  The attraction of arguably the world’s leading concert organist produced a near sell-out at Cromer Parish Church. In his typically flamboyant manner, Carlo Curley thrilled an audience of over 330 with a repertoire of church, light classical and popular music, plus the occasional surprise of his own.

Carlo Curley Concert review

A video camera and large screen, focused on the organ, allowed the audience to follow Carlo Curley’s hands across the keyboards and his amazing control of the stops. Equally, his natural showmanship was evident as he acted as his own link-man and at the end when he was overwhelmed with demands for his CDs.  "We were very privileged to acquire the services of such a high profile artist", said Rotary President Joe Floyd. "It was a unique experience and a major factor in our best ever fund-raising activity".

LOCAL CHESS CLUB READY FOR NEW SEASON

North Norfolk chess club are set for the new season, having successfully fielded three teams last year in the Norfolk league. The 'A' team managed to keep their place in the first division, whilst all other keen players were given the opportunity to try their luck in either of the two teams which competed in division 3. Competitive chess was therefore available to those interested, alongside the informal meetings at the home venue on Friday evenings. This season the club will play at the Windham Arms in Sheringham, and further details can be obtained from the secretary on 01263 823814. More players are always welcome and able to take part in all activities.
