"It's time to think again"
Trevor Ivory urges North Norfolk District Council to think again about its plans for
Sheringham's toilets. The results of a survey of every home in Sheringham have been
hailed as "astonishing" by Trevor Ivory. "When I first agreed to
organise the survey at the request of the Sheringham Enhancement Group, I knew that the
future of the town's toilets was something that people felt strongly about. But even I did
not realise just how strongly they felt, it is simply astonishing" said Mr Ivory as
he published the results of the survey.
"I have already received over 500 completed surveys and the results are very
clear, local people want the Council to think again about the future of Sheringham's
toilets. They are an important facility for local people and also for the thousands of
tourists on whom our economy depends."
The survey revealed that:
* A staggering 93% of people want to see the permanent toilet block on the East Promenade
renovated and reopened rather than sold off, whilst 74% of the town think the temporary
toilets are unsightly and 64% say they are difficult to access.
* 97% of residents want to see all of Sheringham's toilets kept open all year around and
if any toilets are sold off in the town, 96% of people want to see the proceeds of the
sale ring-fenced and reinvested in improved toilet facilities in Sheringham.
* Even more overwhelming was the number of people who oppose any plans to close the High
Street toilets, with 99% of people saying they want these toilets kept open.
"These results really do show the strength of feeling about this issue amongst local
people. It is not just the figures, although these are overwhelming, but also the number
of people who have taken part. No-one can be in any doubt about what people want to see -
the re-opening of the East Prom toilets and more investment in all the public toilets in
the town" Mr Ivory commented.
"Tomorrow morning, the Council's Cabinet is meeting and will discuss toilets in
the District and I urge them to think again on their plans for the toilets in Sheringham.
I want to see a clear and equivocal commitment to keep open the toilets on the High Street
and to re-open the permanent toilets on the East Prom." Mr Ivory has written to
the Leader of the Council and the Cabinet Member responsible for toilets calling on them
to listen to the views of local people.
