Scientists have shown (Journal of Applied Ecology / Eastern Daily Press
article 01/10/2008), that Wind Turbines in lowland areas have not scared away rare birds
or affected their population distribution. Whilst each proposal needs proper planning, it
is becoming clearer by the day that the feared impacts of Wind Turbines are not
materialising.
Energy production is rarely without any impacts, and the UK faces some important choices
over the next few years. More nuclear power stations will have significant landscape
impacts plus of course the as yet unsolved problem of radioactive waste. More coal fired
power stations will increase carbon and sulphur emissions, as well as creating new
man-made waste heaps - a reminder of the energy production impacts of coal that
communities across the county have faced in the past.
We desperately need more investment in Renewable Energy (RE) in this country, not only to
counter the man-made climate change that threatens future generations but also to reduce
our dependence on dwindling fossil-fuels reserves, particularly imported oil and gas.
Having a lot more solar, wave/tidal and wind power has multiple benefits: we can improve
energy security, cut pollution and generate a lot of local green jobs in the process.
Wind technology both onshore and offshore will contribute the majority of
Eastern Regions target of 20% RE by 2020. This region is set to become a leader in
green energy if the right decisions are made. That will mean change and some landscape
impacts, but it will herald a change to a clean renewable energy system that poses very
few health risks, has low impacts on wildlife and creates no dangerous waste.
Faithfully
