Public commitments over the future of Sheringham's toilets welcomed.

Local people welcome North Norfolk District Council's apparent change of heart over the future of Sheringham's toilets.

A packed public meeting in Sheringham this evening heard the Cabinet Member for the Environment, who is responsible for public toilets in the District, admit that the temporary toilets on the East Promenade were not fit for purpose. Cllr Hannah also agreed to work with the Town Council to secure the provision of decent public toilets for the East Promenade.

The meeting was organised by the Conservative Spokesman for North Norfolk, Trevor Ivory together with the Mayor of Sheringham, Noel Gant, the Sheringham Chamber of Trade and the Sheringham Enhancement Group.

Speaking after the meeting, Trevor Ivory said, "It was good to finally hear Cllr Hannah acknowledge that the East Promenade temporary toilets are not fit for purpose and that he will drive forward the discussion with the Town Council about a more permanent solution. I was also relieved to hear him confirm that there would be no more toilet closures in Sheringham. Local people will be delighted to know that the future of the High Street toilets is secure."

The meeting was set up following the huge response to Trevor Ivory's petition and survey, which showed a massive majority in favour of keeping all of Sheringham's permanent toilets open.

"Toilets are so important to local people and to the thousands of tourists who visit Sheringham that we need to be improving them, not closing them down." Trevor Ivory added, "I want to see toilet facilities across the District improved and more toilets open all year around - people do not only need the toilet in the summer."
