GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE THIS CHRISTMAS
GIVE THE BEST PRESENT TO PATIENTS IN NEED
THIS FESTIVE SEASON BY GIVING BLOOD
The National Blood Service (NBS) is reminding those eligible to give blood to make time
to donate this December.
The festive season is a challenging time for blood collection as blood stocks
traditionally fall by around ten percent. The demands of Christmas make it difficult for
many people to find the time to give blood. In addition many regular blood donors fall
unwell with winter colds and flu preventing them from donating while they are ill and the
cold weather has an impact on the number of blood donors attending sessions.
Rebecca Khan, spokesperson for the NBS says, "The festive season is a difficult
time for blood collection as many of our regular blood donors are busy preparing for
Christmas or find themselves unwell with colds and flu. Because of this we need people who
can donate to come forward and help us to keep blood stocks healthy."
The NBS needs to collect 7,000 donations of blood every day to provide patients with
the blood transfusions needed as part of their treatment. Donated blood is used for a wide
range of treatments and conditions including accidents and emergencies, general surgery
and for those patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Mrs Khan continues, "We would like to remind regular donors that they can go and
give blood every 16 weeks and we are also inviting new donors to come along and donate for
the first time if they are eligible to do so. By giving blood you could be giving a
patient in need the best possible present this Christmas."
To be potentially able to give blood you should be aged between 17-59 (you can give
blood on your 60th birthday), weigh over 7st 12lbs (50kg) and be in good general health.
Appointments should be made wherever possible. |
