Tuscan Tart

Serves 6
12 oz sweet shortcrust pastry
2 - 3 pears, peeled & quartered
4 tbsp caster sugar
284 ml single cream
6 oz dark chocolate
1 oz butter

Pre-heat oven to 190 oC. Roll pastry to a rectangle, just under 1cm thick. Place on a baking tray and pinch the pastry around the edge. Remove the core, and slice each pear quarter into 3.
Sprinkle with half the sugar and rest for 1 min before scattering the pears on top of pastry. Bake for 18 mins, or until golden.
Meanwhile, in a small pan, heat the cream until nearly boiling, remove from heat and rest for 1 min before adding the chocolate. Stir until melted and smooth, then add remaining sugar and butter. Pour carefully from the middle, covering the pears and try not to let the chocolate go over the edge. Allow to cool before putting into fridge for 20 mins.

Also try: 1 tbsp brandy in melted chocolate

Sheringham Evening W.I.

The Macmillan Coffee morning held recently in aid of local Macmillan Cancer Care raised £391.50 plus £21.00 from the sale of Macmillan Christmas Cards. Our president would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way.

The speaker at our October meeting was Dr. Michael L'Anson, a chiropractor and an osteopath. He also explained how a posture machine he had brought worked, and demonstrated this with the assistance of his wife and the cooperation of one of our members, explaining that posture affects balance and poor posture can cause pain.

The machine identifies poor posture and therefore can pinpoint where pain can occur in certain areas of the body. Other members then assisted with a communal demonstration, accompanied by much laughter. All members found this session both interesting and informative.

SHERINGHAM LEVEL CROSSING GOES AHEAD

The North Norfolk Railway will soon be reconnected to the main railway network by a tramway-style "occasional use" level crossing between Sheringham's two stations. Managing director Hugh Harkett confirmed that Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate has approved the plans, and that work to connect the lines has been planned for January, timed to minimise disruption to road traffic.

The main purpose of the crossing is to bring visiting steam engines to the Poppy Line. Project director Steven Ashling said: "We also hope to be able to host special charter trains bringing steam from London's Liverpool Street station right through to Holt. These trains will mean extra customers for businesses in the area." It is envisaged that the crossing will be used no more than 12 times a year.

The reconnection has been made possible by an anonymous £30,000 loan on top of some generous donations: the appeal for funds remains open to repay the loan as quickly as possible.

The crossing will be reinstated at an appropriate time - fifty years after most of the Midland & Great Northern railway throughout Norfolk was closed, although the section from Melton Constable to Cromer, including today's Poppy Line, remained open until Dr Beeching's infamous axe swung in April 1964.

The 50th anniversary of the closure is being commemorated by a special steam gala on the line on February 27th, 28th (the day of closure in 1959) and March 1st, and on the following weekend, March 7th and 8th.
