Gardening Column, @ Sheringham PaperGARDENING

Please feed the birds and other small creatures which may not be able to find food due to snow on the ground or other causes.  We had a few warm days recently, and some bulbs got the idea that spring was near, more icy weather is almost sure to come. Add a little compost and a thick layer of mulch to protect the tender new growth.

If you have plants growing outside in containers, be sure to wrap the pot with an insulating material to help keep the roots warm.
January and February are ideal months to lime the lawn if you have not done so in recent years.

In the event of snow, be sure to shake or brush off the white stuff from the branches of your evergreens and shrubs.

If the ground is workable at all (not frozen and not too wet), now is an excellent time to turn the soil. Not only will this expose insect eggs to the effects of winter and hungry birds, the freezing will help to break apart heavy clods of dirt.

Sharpen and oil tools such as shovels, shears, mowers and the like.

RAFA

The Sheringham & District branch held its annual Luncheon on
Tuesday 2 December at the Cliftonville Hotel, Cromer. Over sixty
members were present to welcome Wing Commander Forbes Pearson, a Branch Manager living in Holt.  He spent some 36 years in the RAF as a 'fast jet navigator' (this is the correct trade description). He flew in Javelin and Phantom Squadrons in the UK, Cyprus and the Falklands. Other postings included 18 months at sea with the Royal Navy First Flotilla aboard HMS Blake, and sailed on a task group deployment from Portsmouth to the Philippines and back. Later he also served on the International staff at SHAPE in Belgium and completed his active service with three years on the staff of the Commander, Third Air Force at RAF Mildenhall.

He called his speech to the Branch 'A Day to Remember' and how right he was! With stories about crashing aircraft and the use of his ejector seats, including the occasion when he pulled the ejector handle to eject his seat only for it to come away in his hand! Thinking that this might be the end, he suddenly found himself floating in mid air in his parachute!  His audience listened to his speech with either looks of horror or loud
applause.  It was a speech which will be long remembered.
The collection in aid of the 2009 Wings Week Appeal raised over £167.
