Hearsay in sheringhamHEAR'SAY

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the wise words of Vic and the insights into the gossip on the streets of Sheringham, are not available for this issue.

We hope that normal service will resume as soon as possible and we look forward to it.

Happy New Year to you all.

Sheringham Evening WI

In November the AGM was held and was attended by many of our Members. Our secretary, Diane Evans, was able to report a most
successful year during which members enjoyed a wide range of activities: quizzes, a strawberry tea, a ploughman's lunch, a casserole lunch and several outings as well as fundraising events, the most recent of these being in aid of the East
Anglian Children's Hospice.

Members have campaigned on various local issues including the problems caused by the closing of local Post Offices and the unsatisfactory situation regarding the provision of Public Toilet facilities.

Our president, Maureen Cook, was thanked for all her hard work,
in particular for leading the Station Garden Team which received a Silver Award from Anglia in Bloom.  We now look forward to our Christmas festivities and Group Carol Service and also to 2009 which we trust will be another successful year, led by our newly elected president, Debra Cooke.

Kelling Probus

There were 37 members taking lunch including Mr Alastair Heath, who was a guest of Sam Knowles. Members enjoyed their Supreme of Chicken with Fresh Vegetables followed by a sinful but very tasty Treacle and Almond Tart.

Ray Loake is the Acting Officer in charge of the Cromer Air Training Corps of Cadets. In his talk there were two significant
items which Ray mentioned. Firstly there are currently some 41,000 cadets in this country as many as there are airmen in
the RAF. Secondly 38% of Officers in the RAF have been cadets.
The training which the cadets receive set up these young boys and girls for life. The training gives them opportunities to use their initiative, develop self discipline in order to take on any task and do it to a good standard, and to grow their leadership skills. Should they wish to join the RAF then they would have a flying start over other applicants.

The talk covered the history of the cadets which started before 1938.  Girls were allowed in from 1980 and form 25% of cadets. Elements of the development and training schedule covers: FLYING, and there are special 2-seater tutor aircraft at RAF Wyton which the Cromer cadets use. ADVENTURE TRAINING covers map reading, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, assault courses, summer camps, raft building and many more. All activities are strictly Risk Assessed and Health and Safety covered. SHOOTING on the ranges, DRILL and DISCIPLINE
to work in a team and develop self confidence. When cadets leave the corps they receive an impressive portfolio for their CV. Their qualifications will include First Aid and possibly a B Tech in Aviation Skills.  Hence the best Youth Organisation in the World.
Fred Warner gave a vote of thanks for Ray's really professional talk and slide show. During the three years Fred has been in Norfolk he has nothing but praise for these young persons who have been helpful, caring and polite. Ray quite rightly received a good round of applause.

John Haggis, the Chairman, was looking forward to the Ladies
Christmas Luncheon on 18th December when 70 will be sitting down at the Pheasant Hotel, Kelling, where luncheon meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month. Interested in joining the cadets? Do give Ray Loake a ring on 01263 861686, or to consider joining our little Probus team then ring Terry Penrose on 01263 588772.
