@ Sheringham Community Paper - Issue 98 - 27 February 2009

Dear Ed,

It would seem that Tesco is about to submit revised plans for the building of a smaller store in Sheringham. It is important that, this time around, the majority voice of our community should be heard. We who want a supermarket in Sheringham, nothing more than the normal thing for a town of our size, are and always have been the majority of the townspeople. A referendum on the Tesco
question would have proved this point, and would have settled the issue quickly, fairly, and finally at any point during the last 13 years, incidentally saving us council tax payers a great deal of
money. However, we were denied a referendum, while a vociferous minority were encouraged to whip up an atmosphere of panic. We in the majority were too complacent about this, resting secure in our belief that rationality and common sense would surely and inevitably win the day over mindless hysteria. However, in Sheringham, uniquely among all the other market towns in Norfolk, this proved not to be the case. We evidently face special problems here.

The solution is for all of us who are in the majority to write in to our four NNDC councillors, making our views on this matter clear. We must urge them to change their minds on this issue or, if that
is too much to ask of some of them, at least to grant us a referendum on this question, so that it can at last be settled democratically. The responsible parties are Brian Hannah and Penny Bevan Jones (Sheringham North) and Hilary Nelson and J.P. Moss (Sheringham South). Their email addresses can be found on the NNDC website, or they can of course be contacted by post at the NNDC offices, Holt Road, Cromer NR27 9EN. Ross Wordie, Sheringham

£1000 DONATED TO LOCAL CITIZENS ADVICE NETWORK

The local Citizens Advice network is £1000 better off - thanks to a donation from Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club. Holt and North Walsham CABs each received £500 - part of the proceeds of the Rotary Christmas Sleigh outside Morrisons in Cromer.

The presentations were followed by a talk on Citizens Advice by John Constance, chairman of the Holt CAB.

He emphasised that a unique and crucial service was in danger of being held back by increasing difficulties with funding. "Only so much of our work is funded by local authorities", he said. "The rest we have to find ourselves. In the present financial climate every little helps."
