Active Norfolk

Our club and coach education programme has been recognised nationally as leading the way in this field, covering an extensive range of topics and providing quality development opportunities that are both affordable and local. In addition to this, we have supported over 600 coaches through National Governing Body coaching qualifications in the last two years.

To demonstrate our commitment to coach education and development we have great pleasure in announcing the 2009 Active Norfolk Coach Conference!

The conference is aimed at all coaches from the county, whatever your sport or level of experience and aims to educate and enthuse all about the topic of the day.

The conference is themed 'Talent Identification and Development' and contains a mixture of theory and practical workshops. These workshops will be delivered by experts in their respective fields and will challenge and inspire thinking in both inexperienced and veteran coaches alike.

In addition to the exciting and innovative workshops there will be a presentation from Tim Newenham from the Olympic Legacy Directorate (LDA) on 2012 developments and a keynote address from Mel Clarke, local Paralympic medallist from Beijing, and her Great Britain Paralympic coach.

All attendees will receive a delegate pack including a free T-shirt! The conference will take place at the UEA Sportspark on Sunday March 8th.

This workshop is heavily subsidised by Sport England enabling you to access this fantastic experience for just £12! Spaces are limited so book early to ensure you don't miss out.

The four workshops of the day are:

From Classroom to Country - The role of schools and education in identifying, challenging and supporting gifted and talented (G&T) young people in and beyond the classroom. How you as a coach can work with schools for the benefit of your athletes

From Good to Great - A case study example of how a coach can take a talented young athlete from the club environment through to elite level.

Identifying and Developing Talent through Multi-Skills - This practical workshop will investigate concepts of 'talent' and some of the key abilities, skills and qualities that need to be identified and developed. Using 'fundamentals/multi-skills' as a vehicle, the workshop will explore practical ways to challenge and stretch the most able and to identify, profile and develop talent

Strength and Conditioning for Young People - Explore the role of strength and conditioning in developing talented young athletes. This workshop will seek to dispel myths and provide practical advice on how to develop the strength, speed, power and endurance of your talented young athletes.

DIABETES UK

I am pleased to report another very successful year financially. With all our fund raising, including Walk in the Park, and various donations we were able to send £14,000 to Diabetes UK Central Office.  In September we organised our own local Walk in Sheringham Park specifically to raise money to send diabetic children in Norfolk on a Diabetes UK holiday.

The boy who won the draw elected to go to Scotland, where he had a brilliant time and learned a lot about his diabetes and learned about alternative injection sites. When asked whether he had enjoyed himself he said, and I quote, ''IT was awesome''
As a result of his enthusiasm and praise for his holiday we decided that the bulk of our fund raising for this year would be for children's holidays.

We will, of course continue to support Adopt- a- Project and you will still be able to see us in the local supermarkets in JUNE
Doing our annual collection-the money raised here all goes to the Central Research fund as does the sponsorship for Walk in the Park.

Talking of Walk in the Park, this will be held this year in Sheringham Park, on Sunday 21 June between 10.00 am and 2.00 pm. This is a very popular venue and we are expecting a good turn out again this year. Anyone can take part, old or young-all you need to do is get people to sponsor you or, if you decide on the day you'd like to do it, give us a donation.

Details will be in the next issue of Balance. As this is the 10th anniversary of Walk in the Park, please give us your support and make this the biggest and best.  Our appearances on Cromer Pier continue to be popular both with those of us involved and the holiday makers. Invariably if people win on the Human Fruit Machine- and sometimes if they don't- they will buy a balloon or two.

We launched a balloon last year at the Aylsham Show which landed in Croydon, South London, at a picnic narrowly missing the bowl of coleslaw. The winning balloon landed in Germany. Needless to say, none of these thing would be possible without your support, so a big THANK YOU TO EVERYONE.

2009 is the 75th Anniversary of Diabetes UK and to celebrate Eastern Regional Office are holding an event to which you are all invited. This is taking place at Ickworth House, Bury St Edmunds on Saturday 25 April If you would like to be included in this, please let me know as soon as possible as numbers are limited.

The event is free and if enough people want to attend we will make arrangements for transport. As usual, I am enclosing a copy of the programme in the hope that a few more of you will find something of enough interest to tempt you to Cromer one Thursday evening. You will find us a very friendly bunch always eager to help, where we can, with any problems you might have concerning your diabetes.
Regards,
Doreen Hutchinson, Hon Secretary.
