KELLING Probus Club -MONTHLY Luncheon and Meeting Tuesday 19th February

The Club held its usual monthly meeting and luncheon at the Pheasant Hotel in Kelling when only some 27 members and one guest, Mr Malcolm Poore attended. Low membership was put down to being half term and the need to look after grand children. Because Dr John Bryden, our Chairman was away, our Vice Chairman, Rohan Fennel took the chair. The speaker was Mr Dennis Papworth, a member of Holt Rotary Club and he gave a brilliant talk about the Myths and Facts relating to Climate Change, Food also health and safety topics which was very, very interesting. In essence many of the things we read in the newspaper or see and hear on television are not based on fact as in court of law, but rather on circumstantial evidence or even worse, the use of statistics and not born out by fact.

KELLING Probus Club

For example we get very concerned about Climate Change, the fact is that climate change depends on atmospheric pressure, also weather patterns do change over the years IT was only 300 Years ago that there was a mini ice age and the River Thames froze, The air consists of many different gases, the largest being Nitrogen which is approx 79%, Oxygen with about 19 % and some others but Carbon Dioxide the one we have to worry about is only.003%.The talk covered so many other myths relating to food and other health matters where the facts contradict the myths which we all believe to be true.. I can only touch briefly about the talk, which Dennis gave, but those attending are now much wiser. Dennis will return in the not too distant future to talk about his life as a Battle of Britain Fighter pilot.

Member Hugh Glover gave a vote of thanks and was impressed by the deep thought which had been put into the presentation. He had to say good things about Dennis's talk because he was hoping for a lift home. New member, Mr Brian Leake, introduced himself and said that he was working mainly with Hewlett Packard and had been testing a range of products He retired at 51 and had run three marathons and was a keen caravaner. He apologised to colleague motorists. He has also been the Press Officer for Sheringham Carnival, Three outings for members were discussed for this coming year and the meeting ended at 3:15 p.m. We have a great little friendly club so if you would like to join, give Terry Penrose a ring on 01263 588772.

GIVE A PINT AND BECOME A SPRINGTIME HERO

The National Blood Service is asking for blood donors to 'spring into action' this month and give blood at a local blood donor session.  The NBS needs to collect 7,000 donations of blood every single day to supply hospitals in England and north Wales with the blood products needed to treat patients.  The blood products taken from a donation only have a relatively short shelf life. Red blood cells, usually transfused to patients with anaemia and severe blood loss, last around 35 days. Platelets however used to treat leukaemia, cancer patients and those with severe infections only have a shelf life of five days so it is vital for donors to give blood regularly.

Rebecca Khan, spokeswoman for the NBS said, "March is officially the start of spring and we would like people who are eligible to become blood donors to spring into action and donate for the first time.

"It is important that new blood donors come forward as we lose around 15% of our donors every year as they move away or are no longer able to donate for medical reasons.

"We are also reminding existing blood donors that they can give blood every 16 weeks. If you are due to give blood please do so as every pint is a potential lifeline to a patient in need of blood or blood products."

To give blood you must be aged between 17-65, weigh over 7st 12lbs (50kg) and be in good health. There is no upper age limit for blood donation if you have donated in the last two years. Appointments to give blood should be made wherever possible.

Find your nearest session or make an appointment to donate by ringing the 24-hour National Donor Helpline on 0845 7 711 711 or visit www.blood.co.uk.
