Evening W.I. |
Members of Sheringham Evening W.I. held a most successful Coffee Morning in Aid of
Macmillan Nurses, when we are pleased to report a sum of £210.35 was raised, this will
all be used by them here in our own area. Thanks go to everyone who supported this event
and to Maureen Cook for hosting the event in her home. The sun shone enabling some to sit
outside. The same cannot be said for the evening trip we made in early October when an
outing was arranged to visit Loose's Cook shop in Norwich. This turned out to be one of
the wettest so far this year, but after a few hiccups along the way, we arrived at the
shop and were warmly welcomed by David Colby the Development Manager, Barry Gay, Manager
and Head of Buying and last but not least Bruce Crane the Operations Director. After a
welcoming drink we were given a brief history of the Business by Mr. Crane whose
grandfather had bought the business from the Loose's in 1936. He related how after being
bombed out in the war they rebuilt the business in Magdalen Street and this year extended
to Orford Place in the City Centre and he was proud to be one of the many independent
businesses trading in the city. Mr. Gay then told us about collectables and how it is not
always antiques that are amongst the most valued possessions, many recently made pieces
can and do double and treble in price in a short space of time. We were then given a
demonstration, by Mr. Colby, of several kitchen gadgets that are available on the market,
these ranged from Modern Corkscrews, non-stick pans, even toasting a brie Sandwich with a
blowtorch. We were then invited to take a look around the shop to see what was on the
market and to admire the many collectables available. All too soon it was time for our
coach to pick us up for the return journey. Everyone had enjoyed the evening and many
items put on Christmas lists. We can thoroughly recommend a visit to Loose's. You will not
be disappointed.

Carol Concert and Torchlight Procession with the Salvation Army Band |
Friday, 13th December 2002
We will meet at the Clock Tower in Sheringham at 6.30pm. The procession will be led by the
full Salvation Army Band, up Church Street, along St. Peter's Road to the Station, which
will take approximately 20 minutes.
We are encouraging people to purchase lanterns and child safe lights on the night, as all
profits will go to the Salvation Army.
The procession should be a lovely sight, made up of hopefully around 200 people plus the
band, with banners and large lanterns, plus smaller lights, and traditional Christmas
Carols will be sung.
The Salvation Army will be doing a collection, and we hope that this will give them the
chance to increase their charitable donations at this very important time of the year.
Those with tickets can board the 7pm Christmas Train for Weybourne, where the band will be
performing an outdoor Carol Concert. This will be followed by warming festive refreshments
and the return journey to Sheringham for around 9pm.
It is hoped that this will become a regular local tradition, and that we can join with the
Salvation Army Band every year to provide the local community with a festive procession.

| Our
Water |
Is it only me, or is the water that is coming out of our taps a bit suspect? For about the
last year, I have had the most disgusting water coming out of my tap, at times the taste
is so foul it makes me gag physically. At other times it is so bad you can SMELL IT! This
surely cannot be right. I have to run my tap for up to five minutes sometimes before the
water is fit to drink.
We telephoned the water board and after lengthy questioning, we were told it was because
we had a dishwasher connected to the pipe. The water apparently was sitting in the pipe
and becoming stagnant and when we turned on our tap, this stagnant water was being sucked
up with the clean water and contaminating our supply. Really!! The said pipe has a valve
on it, which prevents such a thing occurring, but, being aware that it was possible that
the valve was faulty, we replaced it. Still our water is the same, so back onto the phone
again, this time it is our taps and washers (despite being less than one year old). So, we
replaced them. Still our water is that same.
The water board then said that major work would be carried out during the year to flush
through all the water pipes and that after they had completed this work, there would be no
further problem. Really!! It made absolutely no difference whatsoever to our water.
Now, being a natural resource that we are constantly being encouraged to use wisely, don't
you think that having to pour five or six kettles of water down the drain before we can
fill one good one is slightly wasteful? Is it only my water that is this bad? Or is it a
conspiracy, after all, I am on a Water Meter, so the more that I put down the drain, the
more money they get out of me. Added to this expense, I actually have to buy bottled
water. Let me know if you too have this trouble and maybe we can make them do something
about it.
