CUT FLOWERS
To keep flowers fresh as long as possible, change the water & cut off a small piece of
the stems every day. If the stems are hard & woody (roses for example), they should be
crushed at the ends to encourage the absorption of water. If you can't change the water
every day, put a piece of charcoal or a copper coin in the water with the flowers.
When arranging flowers, consider using sprigs of fresh herbs, such as mint, thyme or
rosemary for greenery & nice aromas. To make tulips last longer, make a series of
small holes down the whole length of their stems. To keep a flower vase free from slime
& to avoid the stale smell that can be caused by flower water, add just a few drops of
bleach to the water. This will not harm the flowers. Cut off lower leaves from flowers. If
you leave them in the water they will rot & the flowers won't last as long as they
should.
POT PLANT PROBLEMS
When a plant grows very tall & spindly with only a few leaves, it means that it has
been given too much food & water for the amount of light available. Usually, around
spring, when there's not much light. Cut down on feeding & watering. If the leaves are
old, the most likely cause of them dropping is under watering. If the leaves are young
& they turn yellow before dropping, the cause is probably over watering, too much
direct light or cold draughts.

| Embarrassing
Stories |

|
| I had just passed my driving test and was proving to the
new boyfriend that 'women drivers' were just as good as men. We were off to visit friends
who had just moved into a new house in a small village, a place I had never visited
before. Before we left he told me to telefone them and ask for directions, but I would not
phone as I was 'more than capable of finding a house'. Pride always comes before a fall
though, I found the village without any problem, I even found the right street through
sheer luck. Unfortunately what I thought was their drive was the launching ramp to the
small lake in the middle of the village. I discovered what they meant by 'flooding' the
engine! |

| TRY YOUR HAND
AT |
something crafty, or even arty! Batik, for example - have
you ever wondered how it's done? You can get lovely effects on fabric using wax and dyes,
and your chance to try it is at a day workshop on 29 March or 28 June. There's a weekend
(12/13 April) when you can make a project in stained glass, from start to finish. After
that you might want a shelf or other piece to put it on, so you could join a woodwork
course on Wednesday nights at Sheringham High School, starting 30 April. If sewing is more
your thing, you may be attracted by the idea of pure silk Japanese style embroidery (11
April), or cutwork (9 May), or needle lace (23 May). All these are day workshops at Upper
Sheringham Village Hall. For some practical items for the home, you could quilt to
complement your kitchen, or try making a country kitchen wallhanging, an aquarium cushion,
a chicken panel or a colour wash fan quilt. These are one day, half day or evening
sessions to teach you the techniques, so they won't take up too much time; and if you find
you like it, you can come back for more
and there are more!
For more information and enrolment, please call Sheringham & District Adult Education
on 01263 822170.
