& DISTRICT'S FIRST EVER GANG SHOW - 14/15 March |
 |
|
I was very honoured to be invited along to the final dress
rehearsal of the first ever Gang Show in which members of the Local Guides, Brownies,
Rainbows, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers were taking part.
As an ex Group Scout Leader myself, I know how important these groups are to the children
who attend and the leaders of Sheringham's troops really do us proud.

I was allowed to go back stage, where I found over 100
children of all ages, mixing together in the gathering excitement of performing for their
Mums, Dads, Grannys and Grandads and Joe Public too. Hours of preparation had obviously
been put in by the children, leaders and parents, working together with their skills
complimenting each other - the way it should be.
The show began with Sheringham's own "Land of Oz" a mixture of Rainbows, Brownie
with Guiders and Scout Leaders, and what a start! The costumes were wonderful, the
movement on stage and singing excellent. Sophie Graveling, a Guide then gave an ode
entitled "Cowpat" which was very droll. "Consider Yourself" by Beaver
Tom Witheringham had a nifty dance routine and he sang it very well. "Zero
Talent" from Emma King & Stephanie West proved that they definitely do have
talent! |

"Dancin' in the Street" was a lively dance
number choreographed by a local dance school, which I thoroughly enjoyed, then followed
Sheringham's answer to Little & Large, Elliot Morris & Jodi Norris, both Cubs who
had me in stitches with their stand up comedy routine. "The Mice who lived in a
shoe", by Rainbows was truly lovely. When it came to the "Campfire"
sing-along I was tapping my feat and singing along. Unfortunately, I then had to leave
without seeing the rest of the show, but I have no doubt at all that everything that
followed was equally good.
Thank you for inviting me along, it was a very special evening, be sure to let us know
when you have another one so that next time I can see it all! Melanie (Editor) |
It was a great success, with 102 children and 20 adults taking part. Behind scenes was a
little chaotic at times but this was not visible to the audience. The children ranged from
5 - 15years and to keep them occupied backstage there were puzzles, colouring and books
etc. John Payne (Scouting) brought in a TV and cartoon videos for the younger ones. We
played to virtually full houses on both nights and thanks to some frantic dashing around
on Saturday morning the sound gremlins of Friday night were sorted out. The show opened
with "The Land of Oz" which starred all the leaders in colourful padded
costumes. The programme was a mixture of song, dance, sketches and music - a real family
variety show. Popular items were "The Morris Minors" and Sheringham's answer to
Little and Large. The finale was the famous "Riding along on the crest of a
wave" with all the cast taking part, by which time it was plain to see that everyone
had had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Both cast and audience were full of smiles and we
closed to rapturous applause.
The reason for the show was to raise funds to pay for the disabled access at the HQ and of
course the Scouts will receive a donation. A rough calculation shows we will have raised
about £1500 but then there is the income from our professionally made videos which will
be on sale soon. A very big THANK YOU to all the children (and their long suffering
parents) for their time and effort attending rehearsals. We couldn't have done it without
you.
