EXERCISE
- MAKING A FRESH START |
There are so many different types of exercise groups
around now, from the gentle but positive T'ai Chi Ch'uan to the strenuous 'Circuit
Training' routines, that it makes the choice bewildering. However, you cannot go straight
into an advanced or even intermediate level exercise class if you are unfit. Therefore you
should choose a class which offers a simple routine which you can take at your own pace
(like Boxy-cise(copyright) , Level One: a T'ien Ti Tao group.). Which ever type of class
is chosen for your own capability level, START SLOWLY! It is a fact that almost all
practitioners do not realise just how many changes are going on inside the body as well as
on the outside. Disregard of the changes that occur through exercise can cause symptoms of
a subtle nature.
Fatigue is a familiar symptom caused through incorrect exercise. If this is what your
exercise class does to you then this is detrimental rather than beneficial. Either you or
your instructor is doing something wrong. A good exercise class will leave you warm,
slightly aching (probably the next day or two after) and feeling better. You should not
feel totally worn out, be staggering with exhaustion or your muscles burning so much that
you cannot walk straight! So often it is a case of 'out of sight, out of mind', with both
the practitioner and the instructor. The 'internal' factor is ignored totally by most
people, even 'qualified fitness and health' instructors!
All instructors should be concerned about their knowledge of the exercises and the long
and short term effects on both the body, bioenergy and the mind. There can be no excuse
for poor instruction. Once a student finds out, often the hard way, that the instructor
has an apparent lack of understanding or caring, they can rarely be forgiven by the
student (who might have acquired a life-long injury). However, it is possible that an
instructor himself/herself has been taught the neccessary points but omits them in favour
of more exhibitionistic traits.
Possibly the student misinterprets the instruction, or does not listen carefully enough
and causes injury by incorrect practice at home. It should be remembered by all of todays
fast moving, go-getting, never have time for anything folks that the human body was not
built in a day. It took nine months and that was just the beginning! After that came years
of tender loving care and nurturing, feeding it the right things, then keeping it clean,
burping it when gas or air was trapped and nursing it better after little wobbles, scrapes
and imbalances. All this took at least ten years. So tell me cousin, how are you going to
change your body for a better one in a matter of weeks or even months ? Keep in mind that
muscles are 'external' and can deteriorate very quickly and muscle size does not affect
internal strength.
A few people who after reading this far will say, "What's he trying to do, put people
off by saying it takes ages to get anywhere? He should sell it on things like 'easy to do'
and 'quick to learn'...". Well, the one thing I do not want to do is con you. There
is no such thing as 'quick and easy routes to total health and fitness' and never will be.
You cannot rush the body's internal processes. So, all I am saying is:
DO NOT RUSH INTO NEW EXERCISE.
SET REALISTIC GOALS IN ACHIEVABLE STEPS.
STICK TO EACH STEP AND ONLY MOVE UP WHEN FIT ENOUGH.
