Reminders
|
Climbing Plants against walls often struggle in poor, dry soil. Give them a boost of
compost to maintain some moisture levels and don't forget to water them during dry spells
in the summer.
Hanging Baskets. Plant up baskets now to be sure that fuchsias and other plants will be
established and ready to bloom when put outside in late May. Don't put them outside until
the frosts are well and truly over.
Seedlings. Prick out new seedlings and put hardier plants such as Lobelia and Antirrhinums
in cold frames but protect them from frost. Give large seedlings liquid feed to prevent
them getting stunted.
Bulbs. Take the dead flowers off daffodils and tulips to prevent the formation of seeds,
but do not be tempted to tie up or remove leaves for at least six weeks as they are needed
to feed the bulbs.
Hardy Annuals. Sow hardy annuals in prepared borders now. Sow in rows 15cm apart to make
it easier to identify weeds later on.

My boss's wife came round to visit me and my two day old baby. She was a very glamorous
lady who was always immaculately turned out. On this particular day she was wearing a
bright scarlet jumpsuit.
When my little girl woke up, she asked for a cuddle and of course I agreed.
We sat chatting while she quite happily cuddled the baby. All of a sudden a look of sheer
horror crossed her face and she leapt to her feet. You guessed right, there all down her
leg was a lovely brown liquid, the kind that only newborns can produce! |

| The Future of
Local Pharmacy in Britain Hangs in The Balance |
Ramifications may have resulted in the UK Government delaying its response to the Office
of Fair Trading (OFT) recommendations until the summer recess. The Government made this
announcement yesterday when it announced that it was still considering the implications
the OFT's recommendations for deregulation as published and will come forward with
alternative 'proposals'. The Scottish Executive, National Assembly for Wales and N Ireland
Assembly have all rejected the OFT report. Recent comments from Secretary of State for
Trading and Industry, Patricia Hewitt, have indicated that the Government is not in favour
of fully deregulating pharmacy entry controls. To date, pharmacy entry controls have
ensured that each local GP area is adequately served by pharmacies so that all patients
have easy access to the medicines they require. The OFT recommendations suggest the
removal of these entry barriers to supposedly facilitate competition and efficiency.
Andy Murdock, Superintendent Pharmacist for Lloydspharmacy, said: "Lloydspharmacy
welcomes Patricia Hewitt's comments and feels that they reflect the views of the pharmacy
industry and the thousands of patients who rely on community pharmacies across the
country. Furthermore, we concur with the outcome of the Government's decisions in
Scotland, Wales and N Ireland. The final decision of the UK government must balance
improved quality and access to the pharmacies and not undermine the crucial role that
pharmacists play within our local communities. This is in line with the Government's
proposals to lessen the burden on GPs by providing vital services such as repeat
prescribing services, diabetes screening and blood pressure monitoring."
Scott Murray, Pharmacy Manager Lloydspharmacy in Sheringham, Norfolk comments: "As a
local pharmacy manager it is really heartening for me to see that the Government is
listening to the concerns of patients regarding the OFT recommendations. There is no
supermarket within the vicinity at present, but if one were to open, this would have a
direct and negative impact on the local community." |
